Druckenmiller forecasted that digital tokens could gradually take over the roles of current payment systems utilized by banks and financial institutions. He stated, “I assume our whole payment systems will be stablecoins in 10 or 15 years,” highlighting that this technology could enable faster and more affordable transactions compared to conventional infrastructure.

Druckenmiller, who rose to prominence on Wall Street after founding Duquesne Capital Management in 1981, reflected on blockchain adoption through a lens similar to his previous comments in 2021. Back then, he suggested that a decentralized payment system could eventually rival the financial networks supporting the U.S. dollar.

“Declining trust in central banks has created an opening for alternative systems. The problem has been clearly identified. It’s Jerome Powell and other central bankers,” he said during a CNBC interview. “There’s a lack of trust.”

In recent years, stablecoins have gained traction as regulators and traditional financial institutions examine digital asset settlement options. Payment companies like Western Union, MoneyGram, and Zelle have been exploring stablecoin-based initiatives following new regulatory frameworks in the United States.

The passing of the GENIUS Act last year, which focuses on stablecoin regulations aimed at clarifying rules for digital payment services, has encouraged financial companies to consider blockchain-based settlement solutions.

Although Druckenmiller is optimistic about stablecoins' technology, he remains doubtful about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin fulfilling a long-term role as a store of value. He remarked, “It’s a solution looking for a problem. I’m very sad that it ever happened.”

While he acknowledged Bitcoin’s dedicated following, he expressed a preference for gold, referring to it as a “5,000-year-old brand.” Druckenmiller noted that, although he doesn’t currently own Bitcoin, he believes he probably should.

According to Bloomberg data compiled by Artemis Analytics, the total value of global stablecoin transactions reached an impressive $33 trillion in 2025, showing a 72% increase from the previous year. Notably, USDC emerged as the most utilized stablecoin by transaction volume, processing $18.3 trillion, while Tether’s USDT managed $13.3 trillion, maintaining its lead by market capitalization at $187 billion.
