In a memo to clients released last Tuesday, Hougan addressed the worries surrounding Bitcoin’s price downturn. He noted that the cryptocurrency is down approximately 27.5% from its all-time high reached in October and described this decline as mere “short-term noise.”

Understanding Bitcoin’s Value: More Than Just Price

This week, Bitcoin momentarily dropped below $90,000, rekindling investor inquiries about the foundation of its worth.

Most often, Hougan opens his discussions with advisors by addressing a critical question: how can an asset without profits or dividends hold a valuation of $2 trillion?

His response highlights the need to consider Bitcoin not as a physical asset but rather as a digital utility.

Hougan frames Bitcoin as a service for storing wealth—a means of safeguarding value without the need for banks, governments, or intermediaries, which he argues alleviates discomfort some may feel regarding intangible assets.

He states, “The value of Microsoft’s stock is linked to how many users desire its service.” Bitcoin adheres to similar principles; the greater the demand for its service, the more valuable it becomes.

Unlike software, though, Bitcoin doesn’t operate on a rental or subscription model. “The only way to access the service is by purchasing the asset,” he explained.

This model of demand driven by scarcity accounts for Bitcoin’s remarkable 28,000% rise in value over the past decade, a time when a combination of institutional, pension fund, and individual interest has surged.

Hougan noted that increasing adoption of digital solutions, alongside soaring global debt, will provide supportive conditions for Bitcoin’s relevance in the future.
