During a recent interview on CNBC’s Power Lunch, Lee articulated his view that digital assets should generally benefit from a declining U.S. dollar and a Federal Reserve approaching a softer monetary policy. Nonetheless, he remarked that the crypto sector has missied out on significant growth drivers in this cycle, especially since leverage in the industry has been significantly reduced.

“Crypto doesn’t have the leverage tailwind because the industry delevered,” Lee noted. He explained that the ongoing rise in gold and silver prices is diverting investor focus towards these metals instead of cryptocurrencies. “There’s a FOMO into buying that instead of crypto,” he added. Historically, Lee has observed that after periods where precious metals take a breather, Bitcoin and Ethereum often see sharp rebounds.

The difference in market performance has been pronounced lately, with gold prices reaching a record high of $5,100 on Monday and rising about 17.5% since January 1. Silver's gains have been even more significant, soaring 57% year-to-date to peak at $110.

Analysts have attributed the rise in precious metals to an increase in geopolitical tensions, threats related to trade tariffs, and persistent weakness in the U.S. dollar, prompting many investors to retreat to traditional safe-haven assets.

Lee mentioned that the crypto market is still grappling with the repercussions of a significant deleveraging event that occurred on October 10, which he described as having severely affected many key players, encompassing exchanges and market makers. While he acknowledged that the sector is "limping along," he also noted that its underlying fundamentals have vastly improved since that time.

Bitcoin has unfortunately struggled to reflect these improving fundamentals. The largest cryptocurrency is down approximately 30% from its highs in October and has struggled to maintain momentum above the $95,000 mark, recently retreating closer to a support level near $86,000.

“The precious metal move has sucked a lot of the oxygen out of the room,” Lee said, pointing out that current prices are lagging behind the stronger fundamentals, rather than indicating a broader weakness in the market.

Institutional Interest Grows in Ethereum

Lee’s optimism for Ethereum remains clear. On Monday, BitMine, an Ether-focused treasury firm associated with Lee, acquired another 20,000 ETH for $58 million, as reported by blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain.

Additionally, Lee indicated that recent discussions at the Davos forum highlighted a growing interest from financial institutions in leveraging Ethereum and other smart contract platforms.

However, not all market analysts agree that weakness in the dollar alone will boost Bitcoin. CryptoQuant analyst GugaOnChain pointed out that recent outflows from ETFs show that investors currently prefer gold during volatile market conditions. “For BTC to thrive,” they noted, “the weakness of the American currency must come from risk appetite, not fear.”
