Gold's Rise Signals Distrust in Fiat as Crypto Faces "Show Me" Phase: Insights from Bitwise CIO

In a client note released on Monday, Hougan highlighted that the increasing desire for assets not controlled by governments, along with diminishing confidence in the immediacy of regulatory clarity, could significantly influence both the adoption and pricing of cryptocurrencies in the upcoming months.

Gold has seen a remarkable price increase, having gained 65% in 2025 and an additional 16% in early 2026, reaching a historic high of $5,000 per troy ounce for the first time.

Gold's Surge Highlights Concerns Over Fiat Currency

Hougan observed that approximately half of gold’s current dollar-denominated value has been generated in the past 20 months, despite its longstanding reputation as a reliable store of value.

He suggested that this price movement is a result of sustained expansive monetary policies, rising debt levels, and currency devaluation, but it's also indicative of a significant change in investor behavior.

“It illustrates that people are increasingly unwilling to keep all their wealth in a system reliant on the goodwill of others,” Hougan stated.

He connected the gold rally to a broader loss of trust in institutions, which has been hastened by geopolitical tensions.

Following the U.S. government's freeze on Russia's treasury assets in 2022 after the Ukraine invasion, central banks increased their annual gold acquisitions, seeking reserves that are less vulnerable to outside control.

In recent developments, German economic experts have called for the return of gold stored at the New York Federal Reserve, while a Norwegian government panel has expressed concerns regarding potential taxation or seizure of sovereign wealth.

Given this backdrop, Hougan remarked that the essential characteristics of cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly significant. Assets like Bitcoin allow for ownership that doesn’t depend on centralized entities, while networks like Ethereum and Solana function according to rules that no single authority can modify.

Terms often dismissed as technical jargon, such as self-custody and censorship resistance, may gain heightened significance as faith in traditional systems continues to erode.

Uncertainty Surrounds U.S. Crypto Clarity Act Passage

At the same time, Hougan pointed to the rising uncertainty surrounding the Clarity Act, which aims to establish a favorable regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies in the U.S.

Earlier this year, prediction markets estimated the chances of the bill's passage at around 80%, but those projections have now dropped to approximately 50% due to recent hurdles, including public critique from Coinbase's CEO, Brian Armstrong.

If the bill does not pass, Hougan warned that the cryptocurrency market might enter a prolonged "show me" phase, where prices and adoption will depend on concrete real-world applications rather than speculation.

Conversely, if the legislation moves forward, it could spark a significant market rally as investors anticipate clearer growth trajectories for stablecoins and tokenized assets.

Hougan expressed optimism about the bill eventually passing while cautioning that, without it, the market should brace for a slower, evidence-based growth period.
