“This provides a particularly accessible entry point for crypto investments through exchange-traded products,” remarked Martijn Rozemuller, CEO of VanEck Europe, in a translated statement. He further noted that many investors prefer receiving crypto exposure that fits within their existing frameworks for custody and reporting while benefiting from transparent costs.

The bank also pointed out that these ETNs are subject to Germany’s tax regulations for cryptocurrency investments. As per the current laws, capital gains may not be taxed if the investments are held for over a year, aligning the treatment of these ETNs with direct cryptocurrency holdings.

However, ING emphasized the instruments carry substantial risks. In its launch disclosures, the bank highlighted potential price volatility, the risk of total loss if the issuer becomes insolvent, liquidity issues, market manipulation, and regulatory uncertainty. This launch is part of ING’s gradual movement towards digital assets. The Dutch banking group, with roots tracing back to the 18th century, has been investigating blockchain-based financial solutions throughout Europe.

ING will not be the first European bank to enter this arena; Société Générale, through its SG FORGE branch, has already launched a euro-backed stablecoin. Analysts have noted that MiCA has bolstered the prospects of regulated offerings like Circle’s EURC.

By providing retail access to crypto-linked ETNs, ING joins a growing list of European banks facilitating regulated pathways into digital assets, without the need for direct token ownership.
