Japan sees launch of its first yen-backed stablecoin, JPYC

Japan's fintech company JPYC has officially launched the country's first stablecoin backed by the yen, alongside a dedicated platform for its issuance. This launch comes as the global competition to capture the growing stablecoin market intensifies.

The JPYC stablecoin became operational on Monday, with the company confirming that it is fully backed one-to-one by bank deposits and government bonds. Additionally, it boasts a 1:1 exchange rate with the Japanese yen, as announced by JPYC on Friday.

During a press conference in Tokyo, JPYC President Noriyoshi Okabe declared the launch a "major milestone in the history of Japanese currency." The stablecoin has already piqued the interest of seven companies looking to integrate it into their operations, according to a report from Business Insider Japan.

The launch of JPYC occurs as the global stablecoin market, which is predominantly supported by dollar-pegged assets like USDT and Circle's USDC, has burgeoned to a market capitalization exceeding $308 billion. Notably, U.S. dollar stablecoins have already gained traction in Japan, highlighted by Circle's introduction of USDC on March 26.

JPYC EX: A New Platform for Users

In conjunction with the stablecoin, JPYC has also introduced JPYC EX, a specialized platform designed for the issuance and redemption of its token. This platform adheres to strict identity and transaction verification protocols under the Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds.

Users can easily deposit Japanese yen into their accounts via bank transfers to receive JPYC, which will be sent to their registered wallet addresses. They can also withdraw their funds back in yen to their specified accounts.

Looking ahead, JPYC has ambitious plans, aiming for an issuance balance of 10 trillion yen over the next three years while striving to create new social infrastructure through stablecoins.

Future Competition in the Japanese Stablecoin Market

JPYC may soon face competition in the stablecoin arena. Monex Group, a financial services firm based in Tokyo, disclosed its intentions in August to launch a yen-pegged stablecoin. Furthermore, three of Japan's major banks—Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Mizuho Bank—are collaborating to potentially create their own yen-linked stablecoin on MUFG’s stablecoin issuance platform, Progmat.

Additionally, Japan’s Financial Services Agency is reportedly considering revising regulations to permit banks to acquire and hold cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, for investment purposes.
