CZ Joins Kyrgyz President for the Launch of KGST Stablecoin

The newly introduced stablecoin, KGST, is built on the BNB Chain. Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, indicated that BNB may play a significant role in the future national crypto reserve.

CZ was present alongside Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov during the second meeting of the National Council for the Development of Virtual Assets and Blockchain Technologies on Friday. Since April, he has been serving as a strategic advisor to the country's crypto committee.

According to local media KG24, the country's crypto committee has been instructed to ensure KGST is listed on international exchanges and to prepare specific proposals for establishing a national crypto reserve within two months.

This initiative aims to utilize blockchain technology and digital assets to modernize the financial landscape, attract foreign investment, and enhance transparency in both government and banking infrastructures.

The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic has confirmed it will implement a three-phase pilot program for the digital som, following an earlier demonstration with Build Block TECH.

The pilot will start with linking commercial banks for interbank transactions, followed by integration with the Central Treasury for government and social payments. The final phase will focus on offline and low-connectivity transactions before moving to a national rollout.

“Once all three phases are successfully piloted, the platform will be deployed nationally and expanded,” stated the central bank.

Despite this progress, the bank maintained that a decision on the issuance of a CBDC will only be made after evaluations are completed by 2026.

More than 100 countries currently explore CBDC implementation. However, only three—Bahamas' Sand Dollar, Nigeria's e-Naira, and Jamaica's JAM-DEX—are operational, as reported by CBDCTracker.org.

Emphasis on Education and Innovation

President Japarov has also tasked the Ministry of Science and Higher Education with developing programs focused on digital financial literacy and training specialists in blockchain and artificial intelligence.

CZ announced that Binance Academy will collaborate with ten leading universities in Kyrgyzstan while also fully localizing the Binance app for the nation.

This announcement follows the recent pardon of CZ by former President Donald Trump, relating to charges of anti-money laundering violations that occurred during his tenure as CEO of Binance.

In 2023, Zhao had pleaded guilty to money laundering violations at the exchange; as a result, Binance agreed to pay over $4 billion in forfeiture, and Zhao was ordered to pay $50 million in fines to settle this landmark case.

Although Zhao agreed to resign from his position as CEO of Binance, this week’s presidential pardon could potentially allow him to reclaim his role.
