Russia’s leading bank, Sberbank, is advancing its efforts in digital finance as it experiments with decentralized finance (DeFi) tools and introduces investment products related to cryptocurrencies.

During the “FI Day. AI & Blockchain” conference in Moscow, senior executives from Sberbank shared their strategy centered on digital financial assets, blockchain infrastructure, and regulated access to crypto-linked investments.

Notably, the bank is working on connections with public blockchains, marking a significant development for an institution that holds systemic importance in Russia's tightly regulated financial sector.

Engagement with Regulators on Crypto Integration

Anatoly Popov, the deputy chairman of Sberbank’s management board, indicated that the bank is in active discussions with the Bank of Russia and Rosfinmonitoring regarding how to position crypto-related services within a regulated framework.

He emphasized the aim of enabling qualified investors to access digital assets via familiar banking channels while ensuring investor protection and overall financial stability.

Sberbank has already initiated tests with DeFi instruments, forecasting a convergence between traditional banking and decentralized finance over time.

Within existing regulations, the bank markets structured bonds and digital financial assets (DFAs) that provide returns linked to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether, as well as diversified baskets of digital assets.

These offerings allow clients to engage with the crypto markets without the need to hold tokens directly.

Moreover, Sberbank has launched various digital asset funds that track indices associated with Bitcoin and Ether, along with a more extensive crypto infrastructure portfolio that features assets like Solana, Tron, Avalanche, and BNB.

The bank has also issued several structured bonds, available on exchanges and over the counter, with yields connected to Bitcoin and Ether indices.

The total volume of these crypto-linked products has reached approximately 1.5 billion rubles, a robust figure for a developing market.

Although Sberbank does not consider cryptocurrencies as speculative investments on its own balance sheet, it has expressed a willingness to function as a liquidity provider and market maker on regulated platforms once clear regulations are established.

The bank believes that the adoption of cryptocurrencies among Russians is considerable, with forecasts from the central bank suggesting that digital asset holdings in domestic wallets could surge to hundreds of billions of rubles by early 2025.

Sberbank’s Own Blockchain Development

In addition to its crypto-linked products, Sberbank continues to develop its proprietary blockchain platform for issuing and managing digital financial assets.

This internally developed platform accommodates smart contracts and tokenization tools for corporate clients and has already been utilized to issue digital assets linked to commodities and cryptocurrency indices.

Looking forward, Sberbank identifies stablecoins, tokenized assets, and increased interoperability between private and public blockchains as vital trends.

Bank executives noted a particular interest in public networks with established smart contract ecosystems, such as Ethereum, although broader integration is contingent on achieving regulatory clarity.

In March, Sberbank unveiled a blockchain technology-driven token that tracks global cocoa prices.
