After a recent meeting facilitated by the White House with industry stakeholders, Patrick Witt, the Executive Director of the President’s Council of Advisors on Digital Assets, expressed optimism about the bill's potential success. He stated, "Over the past few months, we have made significant progress on several challenging policy issues. I believe we will also be able to solve this one (stablecoin yield)."

The momentum behind the bill slowed significantly last month when Coinbase withdrew its support, largely due to concerns over a proposed ban on stablecoin yields, which has emerged as a critical sticking point.

In contrast to Coinbase, other major players such as crypto venture capital firm a16z and Ripple, who are among the top supporters of the industry’s leading super PAC, Fairshake, have taken a different stance. In late January, the White House urged Coinbase to re-enter discussions, although negotiations have proven challenging.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), high-profile banking executives, including JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon, had a contentious discussion with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong regarding stablecoin rewards at last month’s World Economic Forum in Davos.

Banks Maintain Their Resistance

It's not surprising that bankers continue to firmly oppose the idea of stablecoin yields, even following the White House talks. The American Bankers Association (ABA) released a statement advocating for a "thoughtful, effective policy" surrounding cryptocurrency. They emphasized the necessity for any legislation to bolster local lending to families and businesses, citing the importance of promoting economic growth and ensuring the stability of the financial system.

In response to the bankers' comments, Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy, expressed skepticism regarding the sector's willingness to reach a middle ground on the bill. "It sounds nice, but it really doesn't appear that they are open to compromising," he remarked.

However, Summer Mersinger, the CEO of the Blockchain Association, which represents over 100 crypto firms, including Coinbase, described the White House meeting as a "positive step" toward the passage of the bill.
