Ethereum Faces a Critical Resistance Challenge

Recently, Ethereum surpassed a significant price threshold, retesting the $3,400 mark for the first time in over a month. The leading altcoin has experienced a 6% rise within a day, moving from around $3,100 to its current price levels.

Since the beginning of the year’s rally, ETH has been trapped between the $3,000 and $3,300 levels. While it struggled to break above this upper boundary last week, it has now concluded the day above this level and is working to establish it as support.

Analyst Michaël van de Poppe remarked, “it’s ETH season,” as the altcoin has consistently traded above the 21-day Moving Average (MA) since January 1. He emphasized that holding above this crucial level is vital for maintaining upward momentum.

Market observers believe Ethereum is "prepared to achieve new highs and sustain its upward trend." Van de Poppe forecasts that ETH may soon retest the $3,800 mark.

On the other hand, trader Daan Crypto Trades noted that Ethereum is currently undergoing a "significant test." He observed that the altcoin has fluctuated within the $2,600 to $3,300 range over the past two months and that a breakout from this price range is essential for establishing its future direction.

According to the charts, Ethereum needs to reclaim the $3,350 level, where the 200-day exponential moving average (EMA) resides. This benchmark has acted as a significant resistance area since November, and breaking above it “should result in a move higher, targeting the Daily 200MA currently around the $3,600 region."

Could ETH Be Following Its 2018 Patterns?

Crypto analyst Jelle shared a positive perspective on Ethereum, claiming the cryptocurrency “looks better than it has in years” against both Bitcoin (BTC) and the US Dollar. He contended that both charts are setup for upward movement, indicating the end of ETH's downtrend against BTC and suggesting a strong push towards the $4,000 price point for ETH/USD. The anticipated rally in ETH/BTC implies that “ETHUSD could see substantial price increases in the coming months.”

Another analyst, Alex Wacy, noted that a “significant ETH rotation in eight years [is] currently underway.” He pointed out that Ethereum seems to be following a similar strategy to its breakout in 2018 against BTC, but this time with “larger players” and “more capital entering the market.”

Historically, ETH underwent a multi-year accumulation phase against Bitcoin from 2015 to 2017, culminating in substantial growth in 2018. After an initial breakout, the cryptocurrency re-accumulated in a falling wedge pattern, triggering a remarkable 50x surge from this formation.

Currently, Ethereum's trading pair against BTC has again experienced a multi-year falling wedge pattern, which was broken in the last quarter of 2025. If this historical trend continues, Ethereum could witness a significant price increase against Bitcoin in the months ahead.
