As Bitcoin's value dips below the average cost basis of U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), many investors find themselves at a loss. This downturn follows notable outflows, marking the second- and third-largest weekly withdrawals on record, according to research from Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy.

Recent weeks have seen a surge in outflows. The 11 U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs observed net redemptions totaling about $2.8 billion over the last two weeks, which includes $1.49 billion last week and $1.32 billion the week prior, according to data from Coinglass.

This trend of sustained withdrawals contrasts sharply with the strong inflow seen late last year.

Despite the downturn, Thorn noted that institutional investors seem to be maintaining their positions better than the current price levels might indicate.

The total assets under management for spot Bitcoin ETFs have decreased by approximately 31.5% from their peak of around $165 billion in October, while Bitcoin's price has decreased nearly 40% within the same timeframe.

Nevertheless, cumulative ETF inflows are only about 12% lower than their peak, suggesting that long-term holders are not capitulating entirely.

However, there are rising concerns that declining demand may lead to a deeper downturn. Nick Ruck, director at LVRG Research, cautioned that Bitcoin could slide into a prolonged bear market if buying interest does not return. He noted persistent macro uncertainty, geopolitical issues, and a tendency among investors to reduce risk as significant obstacles that may contribute to the trend, with technical indicators showing sustained selling pressure.

Whether ETF flows stabilize in the near future will be crucial to determining if Bitcoin can regain momentum or face further declines.

Morgan Stanley's Bitcoin ETF: A Strategic Move for Long-Term Gains

Morgan Stanley's upcoming spot Bitcoin ETF is perceived as more of a strategic investment rather than a means of attracting substantial inflows, according to Jeff Park, chief investment officer at ProCap.

Park pointed out that this move could provide reputational and institutional advantages that extend beyond immediate fund performance, boosting the bank's position in the digital asset landscape, even if the ETF does not emerge as a frontrunner in the market.

His remarks followed Morgan Stanley's recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to launch a spot Bitcoin ETF and a Solana-linked product.

According to Park, the filing indicates a wider push into the cryptocurrency space linked to the bank’s brokerage arm, ETRADE, enhancing access to crypto trading and fostering tokenization partnerships.

He emphasized that simply launching a Bitcoin ETF signals forward-thinking, potentially attracting both new clients and talent to the firm.
