On Monday, blockchain analytics firm Arkham reported that Bhutan transferred 175 Bitcoin—equivalent to roughly $11.85 million—from its main government wallet. This Bitcoin was sent to an address created about a month earlier, which had already received 184 Bitcoin from state accounts. Up until Tuesday, these coins had not been moved again, and no sale has been officially confirmed.

This transfer aligns with a pattern that Arkham has been observing for several months. The data indicates that Bhutan typically sells Bitcoin in batches ranging from $5 million to $10 million. The most significant recorded sale occurred in mid-to-late September 2025. In February, a similar transfer preceded a $7 million sale to the Singapore-based crypto trading firm QCP Capital.

Interestingly, Bhutan did not acquire its Bitcoin through traditional exchanges; rather, it mined the cryptocurrency. State-sponsored mining operations commenced in 2019, primarily powered by hydroelectric energy. During the summer months, the fast-flowing rivers in Bhutan create a surplus of energy, which has been directed towards Bitcoin mining instead of going to waste.

This strategy has resulted in the production of approximately 13,000 Bitcoin over several years, positioning Bhutan as one of the world’s prominent sovereign Bitcoin holders. Arkham estimates the country's remaining holdings at around 5,400 Bitcoin, reflecting years of periodic sales. Among nations, Bhutan ranks seventh in Bitcoin holdings, while the United States leads significantly with about 328,372 Bitcoin valued at nearly $22 billion.

The profitability of Bhutan’s mining operations took a hit during the April 2024 halving, which reduced the mining rewards to 3.125 Bitcoin per block, thereby increasing the operational costs of Bitcoin production. Following this change, Bhutan has increased its selling frequency, while some global Bitcoin miners have transitioned their computing resources towards artificial intelligence and data centers.

All of Bhutan's digital assets, including Bitcoin, are overseen by Druk Holding and Investments, the nation’s sovereign wealth fund. The fund also maintains smaller holdings in Ether and a memecoin known as KiboShib, which was reportedly created using artificial intelligence.
