Since November 11, the total network hashrate has decreased by approximately 12%, marking the largest downturn since October 2021, a time when the network was still recovering from China's extensive mining ban. According to data from CryptoQuant, the current hashrate hovers around 970 exahashes per second, the lowest level since September 2025.

Effects of US Winter Storms on Mining Operations

The decline intensified this week as brutal cold weather disrupted power supplies in several key US mining regions.

Publicly traded mining companies temporarily halted their machines to safeguard their infrastructure and adhere to grid management requests, further contributing to a slowdown that began as Bitcoin's price fell from its all-time high of $126,000 toward the $100,000 mark late last year.

This shock to the hashrate quickly impacted the economics for miners. Daily Bitcoin mining revenues fell sharply from around $45 million on January 22 to an annual low of nearly $28 million just two days later. Although the revenue has shown a slight recovery to about $34 million, it remains significantly lower than recent averages, reflecting both decreased network activity and lower Bitcoin prices.

Production metrics indicate a similar, dramatic decline. Output from the largest publicly traded miners dropped from approximately 77 Bitcoin per day to just 28 Bitcoin during the same time frame. Meanwhile, the collective output from other mining operators decreased from around 403 Bitcoin to 209 Bitcoin, leading to a pronounced overall drop in network output.

Looking at a rolling 30-day basis, publicly listed miners reported a production decline of 48 Bitcoin, marking the sharpest drop since May 2024, shortly after the last halving event. Additionally, privately owned miners saw their output decrease by 215 Bitcoin, the largest contraction since July 2024, emphasizing the widespread nature of the disruption.

Declining Profitability Among Bitcoin Miners

The profitability of Bitcoin mining has also been adversely affected as output continues to decline. CryptoQuant’s Miner Profit and Loss Sustainability Index has plummeted to 21, the lowest level observed since November 2024.

This index indicates considerable strain within the mining sector, with revenues falling short of covering operational costs for an increasing number of mining entities, despite several downward adjustments in mining difficulty. Although mining difficulty has lessened as some machines have been taken offline, this has not been enough to counteract the impact of plummeting prices and operational disruptions caused by the extreme weather.

If the hashrate remains low, further adjustments in difficulty may occur in the coming weeks, potentially providing some financial relief to operators still active in the market.

An independent analysis by researcher Daniel Batten suggests that Bitcoin mining could actually enhance electrical grids and reduce electricity costs for consumers, rather than overburdening power systems. His study disputes the common perception that mining destabilizes grids or increases energy prices, instead highlighting that the industry’s adaptable power usage can yield measurable benefits to the electrical system based on peer-reviewed research and operational data.
