Data from Bitcoin Visuals reveals that on Monday, the Lightning Network capacity hit 5,606 BTC, surpassing the previous peak established in March 2023. Meanwhile, other data from the Lightning analytics platform Amboss reported an even higher peak of 5,637 BTC, equivalent to about $490 million at current market prices.

The growth in capacity follows a notable resurgence in November and December, reversing the downward trend seen over much of the past year.

This uptick suggests that more Bitcoin is being allocated to Lightning payment channels, which allows for quicker and cheaper transactions compared to traditional on-chain transfers.

However, this increase in capacity has not correlated with a similar rise in user participation. As of this week, the number of Lightning nodes is approximately 14,940, a decline from over 20,700 in early 2022. Similarly, the number of channels connecting these nodes has decreased to around 48,678, significantly below its previous high.

This disparity indicates that while the network is becoming better capitalized, it is not necessarily being utilized more extensively by individual users.

Amboss highlights that this recent capacity growth is predominantly fueled by institutional investors rather than grassroots activity. “It’s not just one company that’s injecting more Bitcoin into the Lightning Network; it’s a widespread trend,” they reported, mentioning that leading crypto exchanges like Binance and OKX have significantly increased their Bitcoin deposits into Lightning channels recently.

Broader changes within the Bitcoin ecosystem could also be encouraging renewed attention toward the Lightning Network. Just this week, stablecoin issuer Tether announced it led an $8 million funding round for the Lightning-focused startup Speed, aimed at facilitating stablecoin transactions over the network.

Lightning Labs Enhances Taproot Assets for Stablecoin Integration

On a technical level, Lightning Labs has launched version 0.7 of Taproot Assets, which introduces features like reusable addresses, auditable asset supplies, and improved transaction reliability for larger sums.

This upgrade enables assets, including stablecoins, to be created on the Bitcoin network and transferred via the Lightning Network, thus marrying Bitcoin's foundational security with rapid transaction settlement.

“With this release, we are establishing a foundation for trillions of dollars to circulate on Bitcoin and Lightning,” stated Lightning Labs, outlining a vision where Bitcoin evolves into a multi-asset network.
