Profitability in the Bitcoin mining sector is undergoing significant strain as the competitiveness of the network escalates alongside declining revenue conditions. The network's hashrate—the total computing power aimed at securing the Bitcoin network—reached an unprecedented 1.16 ZH/s in October. Meanwhile, Bitcoin's Hashprice, which measures miner earnings per unit of computing power, dropped to below $35 per hash, falling short of the $45/PH/s median hashprice reported by public mining companies. This decline leaves many operators close to reaching breakeven levels.

The report highlights that the payback period for mining rigs has now extended to over 1,200 days, while financing costs continue to rise across the whole sector, placing further strain on miners.

Following a relatively stable third quarter, where the hash price averaged around $55/PH/s while Bitcoin traded close to $110,000, rising network competition and a drop in Bitcoin prices entering November have combined to push mining profitability to its lowest recorded levels.

This financial pressure coincides with a noticeable increase in miner borrowing, spurred initially by a series of near-zero-coupon convertible bonds issued last quarter. While miners are increasingly shifting their focus towards artificial intelligence (AI) and high-power computing (HPC), the revenues generated from these services remain insufficient to significantly offset the steep decline in Bitcoin mining earnings, as the report suggests.

Stocks Surge Following JPMorgan's Price Targets

Despite these tightening economic conditions in the sector, the top ten publicly traded miners saw stock prices increase over the past 24 hours, with CleanSpark, Cipher Mining, and IREN achieving double-digit gains on Monday. This surge followed a note from JPMorgan, which raised price targets for these three miners, highlighting a boost in long-term HPC and cloud deals within the industry.

According to JPMorgan, the share price of Cipher Mining had dropped approximately 45% from its peak, making it a more appealing investment opportunity. The bank also noted that the company is “well-positioned” to secure additional deals with HPC clients. This month, IREN signed a substantial five-year contract worth $9.7 billion for GPU cloud services with Microsoft, allowing the tech company access to Nvidia GB300 GPUs hosted in IREN's data centers.

However, JPMorgan did adjust its expectations for Marathon Digital and Riot, citing that lower Bitcoin prices and increased share counts are impacting the substantial coin inventories held by both miners.
