He has maintained this perspective since at least late January, when gold was still gaining traction and crypto enthusiasts were optimistic about a rotation of investments. Cowen’s viewpoint is based on patterns observed earlier in the crypto market. In previous cycles, when Bitcoin prices surged, many traders anticipated that investment capital would eventually transfer from Bitcoin to smaller altcoins—a phenomenon known as “altcoin season.”

The day following his announcement, gold plummeted by 4%, and Bitcoin dropped by the same percentage—an interval that caught many traders' attention. Not everyone shares Cowen's view. A segment of the market has long contended that precious metals and cryptocurrencies cater to different types of investors, meaning that when one asset drops, funds tend to redirect into the other. However, the data so far this cycle does not support this theory.

An added complexity to the “no rotation” hypothesis is the BTC/gold ratio itself. Despite declines in both assets, Bitcoin has gained ground relative to gold, increasing from a low of approximately 12 ounces of gold per Bitcoin earlier this month to around 15 ounces. This figure remains significantly below the middle Bollinger Band of 18 and far beneath the upper band of 26, but the upward trajectory is noteworthy.
