This past Friday, Bitcoin's price was strongly influenced by the expiration of Deribit’s March options contracts. A total of 24,838 contracts were set to settle, with a cumulative notional value of $1.72 billion. Interestingly, Bitcoin landed exactly at the $70,000 strike price, a situation referred to as “max pain,” where a majority of options contracts expire worthless.

This setup has constrained Bitcoin's price movement within a narrow range. Traders predict that Bitcoin will oscillate between $69,000 and $71,000 until the contracts settle later today. As it turned out, Bitcoin experienced a 1.4% drop overnight leading up to the expiration, settling at $70,000 just as derivatives traders were observing close fluctuations.

Market Impact: Long Positions Face Severe Losses

The market suffered extensive damage during this period. Records indicate that 141,810 traders were liquidated within just 24 hours, resulting in total losses soaring to $541 million. Notably, long positions—investments betting on price increases—accounted for $443 million, about 80% of the total liquidations. In contrast, short sellers experienced losses of only $97 million.

Leading the liquidation events, Bitcoin accounted for $191 million lost, followed closely by Ether at $165 million. The most substantial individual loss was an $18 million ETH/USDT position on the Aster exchange, which was completely wiped out in a single transaction.

Breaking down the timing of these liquidations illustrates the intensity of the situation. In a one-hour window, liquidations amounted to around $18 million, but when looking at intervals of four hours, the losses surged to $126 million. Over a span of twelve hours, losses reached $300 million, largely from leveraged buyers who found themselves on the unfortunate side of the trade.

Additionally, the futures open interest across the industry dropped by 5.6%, nearing $107 billion. Ether futures fell by 9%, accompanying a 6% decline in spot prices, signaling that capital is flowing out of the market rather than just witnessing a price depreciation.

Interestingly, funding rates across Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and BNB turned negative. This shift indicates a growing demand for short positions across the cryptocurrency landscape.
