This downturn occurs in spite of a generally favorable macroeconomic environment. Demand is decreasing, market strength is fading, and overall confidence seems to be diminishing. What's behind this shift? To gain insights into changing investor behavior and what Bitcoin needs for success in 2026, we spoke with Ryan Chow, Co-Founder of Solv Protocol.

Traditionally, the fourth quarter is Bitcoin's strongest period, averaging returns of 77.26%. Chow explains that the early months of 2025 saw a surge in institutional interest. “Spot ETFs, ETPs, and new mandates created an access shock; institutions were quickly securing their basic Bitcoin allocations, which drove prices higher," he noted.

However, by late 2025, the situation changed. Chow pointed out that key institutional buyers had built their positions, resulting in Bitcoin needing to compete with increasing real yields. As the cryptocurrency stopped hitting new highs, many chief investment officers began questioning the rationale for holding an asset that doesn't yield returns, especially when alternatives like T-bills and corporate credit do provide returns.

“I think the market is finally facing a reality that's been evident for years: passive holding can only go so far. Retail investors are pulling back, companies have ceased their accumulation, and institutions are reassessing. It's not that they have lost faith in Bitcoin, but the present market dynamics do not support significant allocations in a high-rate environment,” Chow explained.

Additionally, he emphasized that Bitcoin's market structure has notably changed. After periods of ETF excitement and halvings, it has transitioned into an environment crowded with macro positions, currently led by professional traders. The simple “ETF plus halving equals price increase” theory has run its course. Moving forward, Chow believes that the next wave of adoption will depend on tangible utility and risk-adjusted yield.

"The first half of 2025 was about access; everyone was rushing to secure baseline Bitcoin exposure. The second half will focus on opportunity cost; Bitcoin needs to prove its worth in portfolios alongside assets that offer returns," he conveyed to BeInCrypto.

Chow acknowledged Bitcoin’s reputation as "digital gold" and its long-standing appeal as an inflation hedge, but he emphasized that this alone will not satisfy institutional investors any longer.

Chow warns that the severity of macroeconomic shifts in 2026 may be underestimated. He believes that unless Bitcoin evolves into a form of productive capital, it will continue to be seen as a cyclical and liquidity-dependent asset.

Under such circumstances, institutions would regard it merely as that, rather than a vital long-term investment. "Bitcoin cannot rely on its narrative alone to attract investment. It needs to generate yield; otherwise, it risks being undervalued. The current volatility is the market's way of pushing Bitcoin to mature," he stated.

What regulated, secure yield products could entice institutions back in 2026? Chow observed that the ideal solutions would involve regulated Bitcoin strategies that closely resemble conventional investment products, including clear legal structures, audited assets, and straightforward risk profiles.

“The offerings that will draw institutions back won’t be complex; they will resemble Bitcoin-backed cash funds, repo markets, and clearly defined outcome strategies, mirroring familiar structures and risk controls but powered by Bitcoin,” Chow claimed.

He also emphasized that institutions do not need exaggerated returns, like the 20% yields often touted in the DeFi space, which can be alarming. A realistic, net annual return of 2 to 5%, achieved through reliable and transparent strategies, can shift Bitcoin from a secondary asset to a core part of institutional reserves.

“Bitcoin doesn't have to evolve into a high-yield investment to remain relevant. It simply needs to transition from zero yield to a reasonable, clear 'cash-plus' return so that CIOs view it as essential and not as dormant capital,” noted Chow.

Transforming Bitcoin Yield into Practical Applications

Chow elaborated that changing Bitcoin into productive capital means shifting its role from merely being a store of value to becoming high-quality collateral involved in funding T-bills and credit across various platforms. In this paradigm, companies could pledge Bitcoin into regulated vaults, receive yield-based claims in exchange, and maintain a clear understanding of the underlying assets.

Furthermore, Bitcoin would function as collateral within repo markets and as margin for derivatives, enhancing both on-chain investment strategies and off-chain operational capital requirements.

The outcome is a versatile asset: one that serves as a reserve, funding, and yield-generating commodity simultaneously. Its role would reflect that of today's Treasuries but executed within a global, 24/7 programmable environment.

“If we manage this correctly, institutions will focus less on just 'holding Bitcoin' and more on 'utilizing Bitcoin to fund portfolios.' It will transform into neutral collateral that quietly supports T-bills, credit, and liquidity in both traditional and on-chain markets,” Chow noted.

Can Bitcoin Deliver Yield While Upholding Its Core Principles?

While the potential applications are appealing, the critical question arises: can Bitcoin offer regulated and risk-adjusted yield at scale without abandoning its fundamental principles?

Chow believes the answer is affirmative, as long as the market honors Bitcoin's layered architecture.

“The base layer remains conservative; yield and regulation are layered above with robust bridges and transparency standards. Bitcoin's first layer should remain simplistic and decentralized, while the productive aspects are managed on higher layers, such as L2s, sidechains, or RWA chains, where wrapped Bitcoin interacts with tokenized Treasuries and credit,” he explained.

He acknowledged that the ecosystem must address various technical challenges, evolving from dependable multisig setups to institutionally robust bridging systems. Moreover, it needs to create standardized one-to-one-backed structures and establish real-time risk oracles.

“The ideological challenge is more daunting: after the collapse of CeFi, skepticism is prevalent. The solution lies in radical transparency, on-chain proof of reserves, disclosed mandates, and zero hidden leverage. Crucially, productive Bitcoin should remain optional; self-custody should still be an option. We don't need to alter Bitcoin's foundational layer to enhance its productivity; we must build a rigorous financial framework on top that institutions can trust and cypherpunks can validate,” Chow elaborated.
