According to NYDIG, the key drivers of Bitcoin’s surge to its peak in October are now contributing to its decline, resulting in prices dropping to multi-month lows. Crypto treasury reversals and outflows from crypto funds indicate a phenomenon described as “actual capital flight,” rather than just negative market sentiment.

In a note from Greg Cipolaro, head of research at NYDIG, it was emphasized that inflows from exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and demand for digital asset treasuries (DATs) were crucial to Bitcoin's previous success. However, a major liquidation event in early October led to a reversal of ETF inflows, substantial drops in treasury premiums, and a decrease in stablecoin supply, signaling liquidity exiting the market. Cipolaro remarked that these are “classic signs,” indicating the market loop is “losing momentum.”

“We've observed this pattern in every major cycle. The narrative may evolve, but the underlying mechanics remain unchanged. The reflexive loop drives the market up, and its subsequent reversal sets the stage for the next phase,” he explained.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs, once a solid inflow source this cycle, have shifted to present a significant headwind. However, Cipolaro noted that various factors—including global liquidity shifts, macroeconomic news, market structure challenges, and behavioral trends—continue to influence Bitcoin's performance.

“Bitcoin dominance tends to rise during market downturns, as more speculative assets unwind, and capital returns to the most established and liquid asset in the ecosystem. This trend has been consistent, and we are witnessing it again,” Cipolaro stated.

As of early November, Bitcoin's dominance slightly rose above 60% and has stabilized around 58% recently, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

DATs and Stablecoins Experience Decrease

Digital Asset Treasuries (DATs) and stablecoins have historically contributed to Bitcoin's structural demand. However, Cipolaro noted that the DAT premiums—representing how shares are traded in relation to net asset value (NAV)—have compressed, and the supply of stablecoins has declined for the first time in several months, suggesting that investors are withdrawing liquidity.

Cipolaro maintains that even if the market experiences further downturns, the DAT sector has ample room to maneuver before concerns arise. “Leverage remains modest, interest obligations are manageable, and many DAT structures allow issuers to suspend dividend or coupon payments if necessary,” he added.

Positive Long-Term Outlook for Bitcoin

Despite recent market fluctuations, Cipolaro asserts that the long-term outlook for Bitcoin remains promising. Institutional adoption is increasing, sovereign interest is gradually building, and Bitcoin continues to serve as a neutral, programmable monetary asset.

“Recent developments do not alter the overarching long-term trajectory. However, the cycle dynamics—driven by capital flows, leverage, and reflexive behavior—are now becoming more pronounced,” he concluded.
