Darkfost, a contributor at CryptoQuant, highlighted that February is likely to conclude with the lowest Bitcoin spot volumes recorded since the beginning of 2024. He attributes this decline to a general reduction in risk appetite among traders, who are pulling back from taking directional positions as they await clearer macroeconomic or technical signals.

"February is likely to finish as the month with the lowest Bitcoin spot trading volumes since early 2024, coinciding with Bitcoin's price dropping to levels last seen in 2024," Darkfost shared on X. "Current uncertainties surrounding Bitcoin have prompted investors to adopt a more cautious stance, leading to a significant decrease in risk-taking."

Bitcoin Liquidity Continues to Deteriorate

The extent of the slowdown is apparent across major trading platforms. Darkfost noted that Binance remains the leader by a substantial margin, with nearly $75 billion in spot volume for February, followed by Gate.io at $25 billion and Bybit at $20 billion. However, even Binance has not been immune to the overall market contraction.

Since Bitcoin's last all-time high in October, monthly spot volumes have been approximately halved across the top exchanges. For example, Binance's volume dropped from $198 billion to $75 billion, Gate.io's from $53 billion to $25 billion, and Bybit’s from $41 billion to $20 billion. Darkfost framed this shift as a market-wide retreat in participation rather than an issue isolated to specific exchanges.

He also connected the liquidity decline to the repercussions following the significant market change on October 10, when open interest fell by more than 70,000 BTC (approximately $8 billion) due to a sharp reduction in leveraged positions. The Coinbase Premium Index has moved back into positive territory after spending most of February below zero, with a few exceptions. According to the latest data, the premium has rebounded to around 0.006 while Bitcoin was trading close to $68,300. This development suggests that the discount on Coinbase relative to offshore exchanges has narrowed, indicating a reduction in US-led selling pressure.

However, this does not negate Darkfost's overall caution. The two signals can be seen as complementary; while spot liquidity remains scarce and the market operates in a low-confidence space, a key measurement of immediate selling intensity is no longer decreasing.

Darkfost specified the changes needed for a more substantial improvement: "At this point, the contraction in spot volumes shows a fundamentally cautious market phase, where participants are more focused on preserving capital than making bold moves while awaiting clearer macroeconomic or technical signals. For a genuine bullish recovery to occur, stronger spot volume support will be crucial."

As it stands, Bitcoin remains in a familiar late-cycle holding pattern. Although sellers seem to be retreating on Coinbase, without a broader return of spot demand, the market still lacks the depth usually necessary for significant price movement.
