Spot Bitcoin ETFs (exchange-traded funds) have become one of the most talked-about developments in the cryptocurrency world, especially over the last two years. These investment vehicles allow investors to engage in the cryptocurrency market without the need to hold the digital assets directly.

Interestingly, while many focus on the benefits for investors, issuers like BlackRock have also emerged as significant winners. Since the launch of Bitcoin ETFs, institutional adoption in the crypto sector has surged. Recently, a BlackRock executive shared that the firm did not anticipate that Bitcoin ETFs would become a major revenue stream for them.

BlackRock’s Bitcoin Funds Exceeding Expectations

At the Blockchain Conference 2025 in São Paulo on November 28, BlackRock's business development director for Brazil, Cristiano Castro, emphasized to reporters that Bitcoin ETFs now represent the company’s largest source of revenue. This revelation came as a considerable surprise to the asset management firm.

Castro expressed:

"We were very optimistic when we launched, but we didn’t believe it would reach such proportions. Just to give you an idea, it [IBIT in the US and IBIT39 in Brazil – the asset’s reference names] came very close to US$100 billion in allocation."

This achievement is noteworthy, especially considering BlackRock’s extensive portfolio of over 1,400 exchange-traded products and $13.4 trillion in assets under management. The US-based Bitcoin fund (with the IBIT ticker) has accumulated more than $70.7 billion in net assets, becoming the first ETF to hit the $70 billion mark in June 2025.

While the US Bitcoin ETF market has seen some slowdown, BlackRock's IBIT continues to outperform other recently launched ETFs. Reports indicate that as of October 2025, IBIT generated around $245 million in annual fees.

Bitcoin ETF Outflows Considered ‘Perfectly Normal’

In response to questions regarding the recent outflows from BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF amid fluctuations in market value, Castro reassured that these trends posed no surprises. “ETFs are very liquid and powerful instruments, and they serve precisely to allow people to allocate their capital and manage their cash flow,” he stated.

The director noted that the withdrawals were expected, especially as the product is predominantly owned by retail investors, who tend to react quickly to price changes. Recently, the iShares Bitcoin Trust experienced a net outflow of $113.72 million, leading to a total negative record of $137.01 million in just one week—marking the fifth consecutive week of outflows.
