US authorities seized $66 million linked to Bodog and took control of the bodog.com domain. Ayre was potentially facing five years for gambling violations and 20 years for money laundering, but he maintained his innocence, relocated his business operations offshore, and contested the charges.

By July 2017, Ayre reached a plea deal with prosecutors. Forbes reported that all felony charges were dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor related to transmitting gambling information.
