Recent data from CoinGlass reveals a surge in liquidations in the cryptocurrency domain, occurring as asset prices fell amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran. In total, 270,438 traders were affected, with long positions sustaining the majority of losses—amounting to $1.57 billion. Short positions accounted for $107.74 million.

Bitcoin alone saw liquidations of approximately $768.69 million, with $745.3 million of that amount coming from long positions. Following closely, Ethereum experienced liquidations totaling $417.43 million, of which $390.5 million was from long positions.

Exchange data indicates that Hyperliquid had the highest liquidation volumes, with long liquidations totaling $567.2 million and short liquidations at $28.1 million. Bybit followed with $329 million in long and $11.9 million in short liquidations, while Binance recorded $152.3 million in long and $29.5 million in short liquidations.

These forced liquidations happen when margin accounts cannot cover their losses, initiating automatic sell-off processes intended to safeguard both traders and exchanges from accumulating excessive debt. Because leveraged trading amplifies price shifts, sharp drops can swiftly lead to liquidations, creating a chain reaction that intensifies selling pressure and speeds up downward price movements.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Plunge to Two-Month Lows

BeInCrypto Markets data shows that total cryptocurrency market capitalization declined by 6% within the past day. During early Asian trading hours, Bitcoin and Ethereum fell to two-month lows of $80,815 and $2,687 on Binance, respectively.

As of the latest update, prices had slightly rebounded, with Bitcoin trading at $82,023 and Ethereum at $2,737. Among the top 10 cryptocurrencies, Solana experienced the most significant drop, decreasing by 7.7% over the last 24 hours.

Market Sentiment Reflects Extreme Fear Among Investors

The overall sentiment in the market also declined sharply alongside the sell-off. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index plummeted to 16 on January 30, highlighting extreme fear among traders. This marked the lowest reading of the year, down from 26 just a day prior.

Signs of panic were evident within the blockchain data as well. On-chain analytics service Lookonchain reported a significant sell-off by a major investor, suggesting capitulation from key market players.

“One whale, identified as bc1qea, panic-sold 200 $BTC ($16.91M) during the market crash. This whale had previously acquired 300 $BTC ($33.44M) at an average price of $111,459 on September 15 and November 12, 2025,” stated the report.
