In a recent update on X, the analytics company Santiment analyzed the changing social media interest among different assets, specifically focusing on the cryptocurrency market in comparison with Gold and Silver.

The term “Social Volume” refers to the level of discussion a specific topic receives across major social media platforms. This is measured by tallying the number of posts, messages, and threads mentioning the specific term.

Since retail traders constitute the majority of market participants, social media conversations reflect their behaviors. A rise in Social Volume in a market indicates increased retail interest. Historical trends show that crypto enthusiasts tend to move their focus among various categories—such as memecoins, AI, and blue-chip tokens—based on the current hype. However, according to Santiment, the trend has recently shifted: “now, retail is proving to be open to jumping sectors entirely, with social data showing how gold, silver, and even equities are getting more and more interest based on wherever the latest pumps appear.”

The third week brought renewed interest in digital assets as while Bitcoin and other tokens adjusted, retail traders sought to identify potential entry points. By the last week of January, Silver took the lead in social media discussions, followed closely by Gold, while Bitcoin’s social interest dwindled. This shift aligned with Silver setting new price records.

Santiment cautioned, “Remember that when crypto retail begins FOMO’ing in, that’s generally where tops appear.” This observation was reflected during Silver’s surge to a new all-time high above $117, which was quickly followed by a drop to $103 as retail enthusiasm peaked on social media.

With the current low levels of crypto Social Volume, it seems that smaller traders are not expressing strong interest in Bitcoin at this time.
