Tom Lee is currently dealing with a massive $7 billion gap in his financial records, yet the renowned Wall Street bull seems unshaken by this news, at least publicly. On Tuesday, Lee took to X (formerly Twitter) to advocate for BitMine (BMNR), a company he supports, which serves as an Ethereum treasury and has come under fire for its substantial unrealized losses.

BitMine's bold strategy of buying Ethereum has resulted in it operating at a significant loss of approximately $6.6 billion. Nonetheless, Lee continues to argue that Ethereum is the "future of finance."

This defense followed a viral tweet from crypto trader "Flood" (@ThinkingUSD), who highlighted the risks associated with BitMine's precarious position. Flood suggested that such a large underwater position could impose serious selling pressure on the Ethereum ecosystem, creating a "future ceiling" for ETH prices.

"BMNR is now sitting on a -$6.6 Billion dollar unrealized LOSS on the ETH they've accumulated," Flood noted, arguing that Lee has effectively become the last exit liquidity for long-time Ethereum holders wanting to exit their investments.

In his response, Lee—who was credited with helping to revive Ethereum's fortunes last year—sought to explain the vast losses as just part of operating such an asset-tracking vehicle. He felt that critics were misinterpreting the purpose of an Ethereum treasury.

"These tweets miss the point of an Ethereum treasury," Lee said. "BitMine is designed to track the price of $ETH... crypto is in a downturn, so naturally, ETH is down." He offered a memorable take on the losses, stating, "It’s not a bug, it’s a feature."

Lee also pointed out a potential double standard in the criticism aimed at crypto companies, asking, "Shall we call out all index ETFs for their losses?"
