Ethereum’s Much-Awaited Wallet Update is About to Begin

Ethereum users are on the verge of being able to interact with the blockchain in entirely new ways. Privacy Tools Could See Major Improvements

This change is particularly important for users who prioritize privacy. Current protocols like Railgun rely on intermediaries known as “public broadcasters” to facilitate transactions. These middlemen often lead to complications for users.

Buterin's plan aims to eliminate these intermediaries entirely by introducing a universal public memory pool. This transition will empower users by granting them more direct control over their transactions.

He emphasized the importance of minimizing intermediaries, stating, “Intermediary minimization is a core principle of non-ugly cypherpunk Ethereum—maximize what you can do even if all the world’s infrastructure except the Ethereum chain itself goes down.” Such remarks highlight the Ethereum team's commitment to fostering self-sufficiency at the protocol level.

A Long Journey to This Point

Buterin has acknowledged the lengthy path that has led to this development. He pointed out that the concept of account abstraction has been under discussion since early 2016. With the integration of EIP-8141 into the Hegota fork, the objective is to resolve all the issues that the original concept aimed to address.

The proposed technical method centers around what Buterin describes as “frame transactions.” In this framework, a transaction isn’t a singular action; it is structured as a series of frames. Each frame can reference another's data and each frame can authorize a sender or gas payer. One frame will manage the signature verification, while another will oversee execution. This design is modular and aims for broad applicability.

This development also means users can pay transaction fees without the need to hold ETH. They could use other tokens via a paymaster contract or a specialized exchange that can supply ETH on demand—there will be no need for third-party involvement.

The Hegota upgrade extends beyond smart accounts. Buterin also announced a separate roadmap for quantum resistance, addressing four main concerns: validator signatures, data storage, user account signatures, and zero-knowledge proofs.

Existing accounts are expected to adapt to the new framework seamlessly, gaining access to batch operations and transaction sponsorship. After a decade of anticipation, it seems the project is finally coming together.
