In a research note dated February 24 titled “Is Bitcoin’s Four-Year Cycle Over?”, analyst Zack Wainwright highlights an essential observation: Bitcoin has now evolved into a much larger asset class with a different type of investor base. According to Fidelity, Bitcoin's market cap reached an all-time high of approximately $2.5 trillion as of October 2025, showing signs of improved liquidity and steadier volatility compared to past cycles.

The Changing Landscape of Bitcoin Demand

Fidelity's argument on lowering volatility focuses on the one-year realized volatility and its trends around cycle peaks. Historically, there was a consistent pattern: volatility would decrease ahead of significant price spikes and would then increase as the market became overheated.

This time, Fidelity notes that volatility compression is happening sooner following the peak. They point out that 17 new all-time lows in one-year realized volatility were recorded in January 2026, just months after Bitcoin reached new highs in October 2025. This trend signifies a notable shift compared to earlier cycles, attributed partly to Bitcoin's larger market cap—approximately double that seen at the 2021 peak, around ten times the 2017 peak, and more than 200 times the 2013 peak.

Another important factor is the profile of Bitcoin holders and the perceived stability of the demand. Fidelity identifies a group of 49 publicly traded companies that each hold more than 1,000 BTC, collectively owning over 1 million BTC, which represents over 5% of the circulating supply. Additionally, since the first quarter of 2020, this group has consistently increased their holdings each quarter, except for Q2 2022, when Tesla divested a portion of its assets.

On the exchange-traded fund (ETF) front, Fidelity notes that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs were launched in January 2024 and collectively held nearly 1.3 million BTC by January 30, 2026, accounting for about 6.4% of the circulating supply. Fidelity provides an interesting scenario to support their argument: if Bitcoin’s market cap were to reach four times the realized cap in this cycle, it would suggest a market cap of about $4.5 trillion and a price of around $225,000 per BTC as of February 2, 2026. They also note that the Puell Multiple has remained near one, indicating that the daily issuance value has not significantly strayed from its one-year average.

Fidelity introduced a new metric termed the “Profit to Volatility Ratio” to clarify their drawdown claim. They define a stability threshold at 0.01, and this ratio has remained above 0.015 since late 2023, marking the longest period at these levels in Bitcoin's history. Even during a downturn in February 2026 that saw BTC dip below $70,000, the ratio stayed above the stability threshold.
