Sarah: I was introduced to cryptocurrency in 2017 at a HKUST event, my alma mater, showcasing experts discussing Bitcoin and peer-to-peer digital currency. I was captivated by Bitcoin's potential and the vision of those in the crypto space. This sparked my deeper exploration of blockchain technology, which led me to realize my desire to join this industry.

Although I lacked prior experience, I began my journey in a significant Layer 1 protocol in 2018, where I worked in ecosystem roles, engaging with developers and supporting various projects. My initial objective was to empower builders and developers to create practical, decentralized, and efficient solutions that could benefit a variety of users.

Joining BNB Chain felt like the right move in 2023, as it is a leading Layer 1 ecosystem. I’ve been leading a team of ten, focused on connecting with developers, infrastructure providers, and strategic partners to enhance DeFi, GameFi, RWAs, and other utilities on our platform.

Interviewer: With BNB Chain's emphasis on sectors like DeFi and gaming, which areas excite you the most currently?

Sarah: Recently, we concentrated on three pivotal areas: AI, stablecoin payments, and RWAs. The last has experienced remarkable growth—we started the year with only $4 million in RWA-related Total Value Locked (TVL), which skyrocketed to approximately $1.6 billion by December.

We’ve collaborated with heavyweights in the RWA domain, including BlackRock’s BUIDL and Franklin Templeton’s BENJI. Moreover, our asset diversity has expanded beyond money market funds; we now offer tokenized stocks, pre-IPO investments, digital gold, tokenized art, and even explore unusual items like wine and Pokémon cards.

Stablecoin transactions have also risen dramatically, growing from $7 billion to $40 billion this year. We’ve rolled out our native stablecoin and partnered with several regional and European options. Our stablecoin transfer campaign has surged usage, making BNB Chain one of the leading chains for stablecoins.

In the realm of AI, although it's still at an early stage, I anticipate significant advancements in AI agents, AI payments, and tools to assist traders with their research. We are actively collaborating with various AI protocols to integrate them into BNB Chain.

Defining High-Quality Crypto Projects

Interviewer: What criteria do you believe defines a high-quality project in today's crypto landscape?

Sarah: A project must start with a profound understanding of product-market fit. Simply launching a token isn’t enough; teams should recognize how their product adds value and maintains viability.

The team itself is equally crucial. We assess the founders' backgrounds, their synergy, and their potential for long-term collaboration. Strong relationships and shared visions are vital. We also evaluate the project's direction, ensuring it aligns with our vision of areas with strong potential, like AI and RWAs.

Opportunities and Challenges in Emerging Markets

Interviewer: As BNB Chain looks to expand into emerging markets such as Asia and Africa, what do you identify as challenges and opportunities?

Sarah: Many emerging markets face challenges with accessibility to conventional financial systems. This scenario presents vast opportunities for stablecoins, payments, DeFi, lending, and even simple asset maintenance.

The main hurdle is understanding local contexts. It’s essential to have representatives who grasp the needs and problems of local populations. Since our team size is limited, we can’t be omnipresent. To overcome this, we organize events, travel to different regions, and collaborate with capable local partners and institutions. This approach aids in educating developers and nurturing local talent.

Challenges in Leadership at BNB Chain

Interviewer: What has surprised you the most or posed challenges in your role?

Sarah: One of the significant challenges is that we can’t support every project uniformly. We incubate some, provide investment support for others, and collaborate with some through partner networks. It’s crucial to strike a balance, which can be tough to manage.

Clear communication is essential; we need to present our expectations transparently. Given how rapidly the market evolves, we keep developers informed to maintain alignment.
