In a podcast interview released on Friday, Mitchnick emphasized that most clients of large asset management firms are interested in Bitcoin as a store of value rather than as a comprehensive payments system. He explained, “For us, and most of our clients today, they’re not really underwriting to that global payment network case,” indicating that the idea of Bitcoin as a payment solution is regarded more as a speculative option rather than a key investment rationale.

Bitcoin’s Payment Potential: Still “Highly Speculative”

While Mitchnick did not entirely rule out the possibility of Bitcoin gaining traction in payment systems in the future, he cautioned that this idea remains “a little bit more speculative.” He pointed out that significant advancements in Bitcoin’s scaling capabilities are required before any notable changes can occur. "A lot needs to happen in terms of Bitcoin scaling, Lightning, and otherwise to make that possible," he noted.

This discussion aligns with an August 2024 report from Galaxy Research, which suggested that many Bitcoin layer-2 networks, particularly rollups, might have difficulty maintaining their viability over time, despite being highlighted as solutions for cheaper and faster transactions.

Mitchnick stressed that while Bitcoin's future in payments is uncertain, digital assets such as stablecoins have already begun to transform how money moves. He stated, “Stablecoins have been hugely successful in the payments sector. They have massive product market fit as a way of moving value around efficiently.”

He predicts that stablecoins will expand their influence beyond cryptocurrency trading and decentralized finance (DeFi) into areas including retail remittances, corporate cross-border transactions, and even capital market settlements.

Despite acknowledging the potential for Bitcoin in retail remittance cases, Mitchnick views this outcome as speculative for now. His perspective reflects the growing trend within the industry, recognizing that stablecoins may be outpacing Bitcoin in the domain of payments.

Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest, recently expressed that the rapid development of stablecoins is the primary reason for her reassessment of her long-term Bitcoin price forecast, which she has reduced by roughly $300,000. Previously, she had anticipated Bitcoin could reach $1.5 million by the end of the decade; however, she believes stablecoins have claimed some of the roles she expected Bitcoin to fulfill.

Bitcoin Approaching “Fire Sale” Zone

According to Bitwise researcher André Dragosch, Bitcoin may still experience a downturn before identifying its true cycle bottom, indicating a “max-pain” zone between $73,000 and $84,000. He suggests this price range aligns with the cost bases of key players, such as BlackRock’s IBIT ETF at $84,000 and MicroStrategy’s latest acquisitions close to $73,000.

Dragosch asserts that Bitcoin’s ultimate bottom is likely to form somewhere within this range. His comments come as traders continue to debate whether the market has witnessed capitulation after Bitcoin's decline from its peak near $125,000 in October. There is speculation that institutional investors will prevent a deeper crash that could negatively affect their clientele, while others argue that the market has not fully dealt with the leverage present.
