Major Banks Expand Bitcoin Services

River’s recent research examined Bitcoin-related offerings, including custody and trading services, at the 25 largest U.S. banks based on assets. The study indicates a noticeable trend where banks are no longer merely observing trends in the cryptocurrency market; many have taken steps to provide Bitcoin-related products or have announced plans to do so.

JPMorgan Chase has shared intentions to offer Bitcoin trading, while Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs are providing avenues for Bitcoin exposure—but mostly for high-net-worth customers. Additionally, custody services for Bitcoin are on the rise; both BNY Mellon and U.S. Bank have initiated Bitcoin safekeeping for select clients, marking significant early efforts by major U.S. banks in the crypto custody space.

Some banks are taking more decisive actions. PNC Group is noteworthy for having already rolled out Bitcoin trading and custody services, giving it an edge over many of its peers. Additionally, HSBC and State Street are working to broaden their Bitcoin custody offerings within the U.S. market. UBS’s U.S. segment and Charles Schwab have also disclosed initiatives related to Bitcoin trading. Meanwhile, several other banks are still in the evaluation stage regarding their cryptocurrency strategies.

There are also non-traditional pathways to Bitcoin for consumers. American Express offers Bitcoin exposure through a rewards card, while USAA enables Bitcoin access via integrated exchanges, as reported by River.

Large Banks Exercise Caution Amid Growing Acceptance

Despite this trend of increasing acceptance, not all major financial institutions have jumped on the Bitcoin bandwagon. River has identified nine prominent U.S. banks that still have not announced any Bitcoin-related initiatives or strategies. Among these are Bank of America, Capital One, Truist Financial, TD Bank (U.S.), and Barclays (U.S.).

However, the outlook among these cautious banks is shifting. Recently, Bank of America suggested that its clients consider limited exposure to cryptocurrencies, recommending an allocation of up to 4% based on personal risk tolerance. The bank also plans to begin offering coverage of four U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) from Fidelity, Bitwise, BlackRock, and Grayscale, which have received regulatory approval.

Overall, River’s findings suggest that while the adoption of Bitcoin varies significantly among institutions, it is becoming a more common consideration throughout the U.S. banking industry.
