The study suggests that the Bitcoin system can tolerate the failure of between 72% and 92% of inter-country submarine cables before facing serious fragmentation, which would result in more than 10% of nodes disassociating from the network.

However, the researchers warn that intentional, well-coordinated strikes on specific cables can considerably elevate the risk. When attackers target important "high-betweenness" cables, the threshold for significant impact drops alarmingly to just 20%. The study highlights 11 particularly critical cables connecting Europe and North America.

However, this study provides a counterintuitive conclusion, demonstrating that TOR actually enhances Bitcoin's physical resilience.

The data indicates that TOR relay bandwidth is heavily concentrated in infrastructure-rich European nations such as Germany, France, and the Netherlands. These countries possess significant redundancies in both undersea and terrestrial fiber optic networks, making them exceedingly difficult to disconnect from international connectivity. As a result, routing Bitcoin through TOR builds a "compound barrier to disruption," protecting nodes in lesser-connected countries by leveraging the robust infrastructure of Europe.
