Recovery in Bitcoin ETF Flows After January Redemptions

The rebound in inflows came after a difficult period for Bitcoin-related investment products.

In the last two weeks of January, spot ETFs faced heavy redemptions, with net outflows of $817.87 million on January 29, followed by $509.70 million on January 30.

These sell-offs occurred alongside falling crypto prices, reduced exchange volumes, and a more cautious market sentiment that affected equities as well.

Major stock indices have been declining since October, and trading activity in both traditional and crypto markets has been thin due to lower exposure.

Despite the significant inflow on Monday, the total net assets held by U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs dropped to $100.38 billion, down from peaks above $125 billion in mid-January.

This decrease is more reflective of Bitcoin’s price correction than a decline in ETF participation.

Sustained Demand for Bitcoin ETFs Amid Market Pullback

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust remained the leading fund in terms of assets, holding $60.17 billion.

Additionally, IBIT reported daily inflows of $141.99 million, roughly equivalent to 1,810 BTC, even though its shares closed nearly 7% lower, trading at a slight discount to the net asset value.

Fidelity’s Bitcoin ETF, FBTC, led the inflows for the day, attracting $153.35 million or about 1,960 BTC. This brought its cumulative inflows to $11.43 billion, with total net assets reaching $15.18 billion.

In contrast, Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust, GBTC, posted no new inflows and faced cumulative net outflows of $25.70 billion.

Other asset managers also saw positive inflows, with Bitwise’s BITB adding $96.5 million, ARK Invest and 21Shares’ ARKB garnering $65.07 million, and VanEck’s HODL accumulating $24.34 million. Smaller funds showed little to no activity.

Despite the uptick, Bitcoin remains over 37% below its all-time high of $126,080 and has decreased more than 13% in the past month.

Furthermore, on-chain metrics have contributed to a cautious outlook. A CryptoQuant analyst stated that about 44% of Bitcoin supply is currently being held at a loss—a level historically seen during the early phases of bear markets rather than typical pullbacks.

Additionally, data indicated that Bitcoin is trading below the realized price of medium-term holders, a trend that in previous cycles has been associated with prolonged consolidation and increased downside risk.

Galaxy Digital analysts shared these concerns; research lead Alex Thorn suggested that Bitcoin might test lower support levels around $70,000 or even revert to its realized price of about $56,000 if positive catalysts fail to emerge.

Thorn also emphasized that Bitcoin has lost vital moving-average support and that large buyer accumulation appears limited, despite a slowdown in selling from long-term holders.
