According to Goldman Sachs, Strategy has secured the top spot in their rankings, showcasing a short interest that stands at 14% of its market cap, outpacing Charter Communications, which sits at 12%. Meanwhile, CoreWeave and Coinbase each report a short interest of 11%, while Kimberly-Clark follows closely with 10%. The list quickly narrows thereafter, with several companies like Western Digital, Bloom Energy, Dell, Palo Alto Networks, and International Paper recording a short interest of 8%.

This data highlights the context of size and the impact of hedge funds. Strategy boasts an equity cap of about $34 billion, with 53 hedge funds invested in it as of December 31, 2025. At both September 30, 2025, and December 31, 2025, hedge funds accounted for about 3% of Strategy's equity. Notably, the stock saw an 18% total return for the year up until that point, with no average days needed for hedge funds to liquidate their positions.

In contrast, Charter Communications has a market value of around $30 billion, with 62 hedge funds involved, also reflecting 3% ownership at those dates, and a 15% YTD return, requiring two days for liquidation. Tom Lee from Fundstrat remarked on social media about the situation, referring to the intense shorting as a positioning indicator rather than a reflection of the company's fundamentals. He stated, “More signs of a meaningful low in place. When a stock becomes a ‘consensus’ short, it is also a crowded trade… Thus, a stock can rise on ‘bad news’ because the bad news has already been accounted for.”

Brian Brookshire, advisor to Moirai Capital and former Head of Bitcoin Strategy at Swedish firm H100, speculated that much of the short interest relates to the MSTR/BTC basis trade. He noted that Jane Street recently took a significant position in IBIT. He emphasized that if a Bitcoin bull market returns, the potential for mNAV expansion is substantial.

Saylor’s Direct Message to Bears: “Short Us”

Michael Saylor, the executive chairman of Strategy, has been candid about the nature of the company and its strategy in the market. In a previous interview, he suggested that the high level of short interest is a natural result of the company positioning itself as a pure Bitcoin-focused investment vehicle.

He stated, “You know, my real aspiration now is, if you really hate Bitcoin, I want you to love us. Like, we’re the perfect instrument to short, right? Because I promise you I won’t sell it. We’re going to be levered long Bitcoin. And if you don’t like it, or if you just want to hedge it, you can sell our stock, sell puts, or buy puts.”

Saylor emphasized that the intention behind allowing shorts is to make the company's position clear. He remarked, “We have been laser-focused. We’re very consistent. We’re very transparent,” reiterating the operational goal: “We’re going to buy Bitcoin, never sell Bitcoin. We’re going to borrow money intelligently.”
