Tether Unveils Open-Source MiningOS to Compete with Bitcoin Mining Giants

The new software, named Mining OS (MOS), was revealed on February 2 during the Plan 9 Forum in San Salvador. Tether is promoting MOS as a ready-to-use system that can be utilized by mining operators ranging from small to large-scale operations.

According to Tether, MOS is designed to efficiently manage and automate Bitcoin mining by consolidating hardware performance, energy usage, site infrastructure, and operational data into a single control interface.

Consolidating Mining Operations with Tether's MOS

Traditionally, Bitcoin mining relies on fragmented software solutions to manage various aspects of operations, such as machinery, power supply, cooling systems, and logistics.

Mining OS aims to eliminate this disunity by treating each part as an integrated "worker" under one operating system. This allows mining operators to monitor and control their entire setup in real-time.

Current Challenges for Bitcoin Miners

The timing of this launch is crucial as the Bitcoin mining industry grapples with significant struggles.

Since the downturn of Bitcoin prices beginning in 2025, miners faced one of the toughest profit squeezes in history. The network hashrate surged from about 800 exahash per second at the year's start to a peak of approximately 1.15 zettahash per second in October. This increase has driven mining difficulty to unprecedented levels.

At the same time, the post-halving block reward of 3.125 BTC, coupled with falling transaction fees, further reduced miners' revenue. By late 2025, the hash price had plummeted to roughly $35 to $40 per petahash per second daily, while the average cash cost for public miners was approaching $44.

Production costs, which include depreciation, were significantly higher, pushing even the most efficient operators close to a break-even point. Many miners saw their debt levels rise as they sought funding for new hardware and infrastructure enhancements.

As 2026 begins, some relief has appeared. The network hashrate has dipped below 1,000 EH/s for the first time since September, falling to 870 EH/s at times due to winter storms and further reduced profitability.

Bitcoin Mining Landscape

The mining difficulty has seen several downward adjustments, and hash prices have shown slight improvements. Analysts speculate that this could temporarily enhance margins for the remaining miners, even though competition remains fierce.

In light of these challenges, Tether's entrance into mining software signifies its expanding influence across the digital asset landscape. In addition to its well-known issuance of USDT, Tether reported over $10 billion in net profit in 2025 and has branched into tokenized gold via XAUT and formed payment partnerships, including with Opera's MiniPay wallet.
