During the investigation, thousands of illegal mining machines and cash deposits amounting to 19 million baht ($612.9K) were confiscated from one assistant PEA governor.

According to a report by the Bangkok Post on Tuesday, DSI conducted raids on three residential properties, seizing mining equipment, cash, laptops, phones, and bank passbooks.

Operation Copperhead: A Comprehensive Crackdown on Illegal Bitcoin Mining

The raids by the DSI are part of “Operation Copperhead,” which started in December 2025, according to Police Maj General Rutthapon Naowarat. This operation is specifically targeting criminal networks within Thailand that are involved in money laundering and illicit asset seizures.

On January 19, DSI officials successfully confiscated 3,642 crypto mining rigs and uncovered connections to financiers and state officials. The implicated PEA officials consist of an assistant governor, a regional deputy manager, a technician, and a retired service division employee.

Thorough searches occurred across areas in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Sakhon provinces. Investigators revealed that the officials leveraged their authority to secure storage space and ensure electricity supply and transformer access for the mining operation. They allegedly received monthly kickbacks of about 400,000 baht.

Pol Capt Khemachart Prakaihongmanee, director of the DSI’s Technology and Cyber Crime Bureau, stated, “Legal action will be pursued against all offenders without exception, irrespective of their rank or position. This case will be expedited to the National Anti-Corruption Commission for further proceedings.”

Thailand Enhances Crypto Regulation and Monitors Illegal Activities

Thailand is actively enhancing its regulation of digital assets, implementing a comprehensive crackdown on ‘grey money’—funds that may appear legal but often stem from criminal activities.

In January 2025, the PEA had previously revealed a Bitcoin mining farm in Chonburi that illegally tampered with power meters to steal electricity, resulting in the seizure of around 996 mining rigs.

However, illegal Bitcoin mining is not solely an issue in Thailand; it is part of a wider global challenge. For instance, last year, Russia faced losses in electricity costs and tax revenues amounting to millions of dollars due to unregistered crypto mining. Consequently, the Russian Justice Ministry has suggested imposing prison sentences of up to five years and fines reaching 2.5 million rubles for illegal crypto mining operations.
