Purpose-Built Products Replace Open-Ended Wallet Strategy

In a strategic shift, Kulechov explained that lessons learned from various user onboarding strategies informed this decision. He stated, “Through this journey, we’ve learned that onboarding millions of users requires purpose-built experiences, such as savings, rather than generic, open-ended wallet experiences.”

The Family team, which was acquired by Avara in 2023 for their design expertise, had contributed significantly across multiple Aave products, including Aave Pro and the mobile app. Now, their core technology, Family Accounts, will continue to provide authentication and wallet functionalities throughout Aave’s offerings instead of existing as a separate consumer app.

Current users of the Family wallet will still have complete control over their funds through accounts.aave.com using their login credentials. This consolidation comes after a challenging six-month period for Aave, marked by scrutiny over governance issues and internal disputes regarding asset ownership. In December, Kulechov purchased approximately $10 million in AAVE tokens shortly before a contentious vote, which led to allegations from critics like DeFi strategist Robert Mullins that this was aimed at increasing his voting power rather than a sign of long-term commitment.

Tensions heightened when Aave Labs pushed a proposal concerning brand asset ownership without informing its author, Ernesto Boado of BGD Labs. Boado asserted, “This is not, in ethos, my proposal,” and criticized Aave Labs for breaching “all codes of trust with the community” by hurrying the submission during a fruitful forum discussion.

Kulechov noted that “all functions move to Mask,” including intellectual property, chain infrastructure, and social media accounts, while maintaining Lens as permissionless infrastructure.

Aave continues to be among the leading DeFi platforms, boasting a total value locked of over $45 billion as of October. Kulechov, who was born in Estonia and raised in Finland, recently acquired a £22 million mansion in London’s Notting Hill and is gearing up to launch Aave V4.
