Recent downturns in the cryptocurrency market highlight the inherent volatility of digital assets; however, this hasn’t deterred institutional interest in blockchain technology. Despite significant price fluctuations, long-term investors are increasingly directing their resources toward the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA).

According to analytics platform rwa.xyz, there is currently $35.67 billion in RWAs on-chain (excluding stablecoins), with tokenized private credit and U.S. Treasury debt being the most sought-after categories.

A representative from BNB Chain reported that the total value locked (TVL) in RWAs on their network surged from $5 million to $1 billion in just this year. This growth has been propelled by key players in traditional finance such as USYC (Circle), BlackRock (BUIDL), Franklin Templeton (BENJI), VanEck (VBILL), Qatari National Bank (QCDT), and China Merchant Bank (CMBMINT), all of which now offer RWA products on the BNB Chain.

The momentum shows no signs of slowing. A report by McKinsey & Company, published in June 2024, projects that the global market for tokenized real-world assets may reach up to $4 trillion by 2030.

Long-Term Trends Amid Short-Term Volatility

Experts in the industry believe that as the global financial infrastructure evolves, the turbulence seen in crypto markets will become less significant.

Sarah Song, the head of business development at BNB Chain, observed that the TVL of on-chain RWAs has shown consistent growth since 2022, aligning with the increasing prominence of stablecoins and the desire for a more diversified portfolio on-chain.

“Investors have the flexibility to switch between asset types on-chain, enjoying a 24/7 trading experience tailored to varying risk appetites and market conditions,” Song explained.

This provides a unique opportunity for investors to directly access crypto-native assets, alongside traditional investments like Treasury bills and private credit—attracting institutional capital seeking efficiency.

Even during bearish market periods, the demand for tokenized, cash-flow-backed assets remains robust, securing RWAs as one of the most steadfast growth sectors within the industry. This trend positions tokenized RWAs as a prime application of blockchain technology.

Understanding the Shift of Real-World Value On-Chain

Mike McCluskey, CEO of Sologenic, likened the current wave of RWAs to the early days of the internet.

“We’re at the inception of an exponential growth trend where real-world value is transitioning on-chain. Soon, every asset will have a corresponding digital token,” McCluskey stated.

Currently, tokenized government securities, particularly U.S. Treasuries and T-bills, lead in demand for RWAs; however, emerging use cases are anticipated due to friendlier regulations and clearer compliance guidelines.

This has enabled Sologenic to develop tokenized equities, which can now be accessed directly through cryptocurrency wallets. “The new credit and yield-based assets are becoming more feasible with favorable regulations and an expanded ecosystem of service providers,” he added.

Bill Barhydt, founder and CEO of Abra, echoed similar sentiments, indicating that new Layer-1 protocols like Solana and SUI are demonstrating that decentralized networks can compete with traditional transaction systems effectively.

Supporting this claim, crypto research firm Messari reported a valuation of $418.1 million in RWAs on Solana, with yield-bearing assets, particularly tokenized treasuries from Ondo Finance, being the fastest-growing segment.

Innovative use cases continue to emerge, with Dave Hendricks, CEO and founder of Vertalo, introducing the concept of “Venture Asset Treasuries” (VAT).

Unlike traditional crypto-collateralized digital assets (DAT), VATs feature real-world private assets that can be actively managed for appreciation, which may result in greater upside potential than DATs, previously hindered by Howey compliance issues.

Navigating Regulations and Challenges

Whether in a bullish or bearish market, global regulators are continually enhancing frameworks related to tokenized assets, custody, disclosure, and stablecoin structures, leading to maturation in the RWA sector.

“We now have greater clarity surrounding tokenized RWAs, especially following the recent appointments made in the SEC and CFTC,” Hendricks remarked, highlighting various policy developments as significant advantages.

However, Staci Warden, CEO of the Algorand Foundation, noted that regulatory fragmentation poses ongoing challenges for RWA growth. Differences in regulations across the U.S., Europe, and Asia complicate the scaling of a unified product for banks.

She emphasized that interoperability among blockchains and existing systems for custody and accounting remain overly customized and costly. Furthermore, Warden pointed out the heightened risk management required when safeguarding user experience and key management, indicating that until institutions can safely operate at scale, many will stick to pilot programs rather than full deployment.

A Promising Outlook for RWAs

Despite existing challenges, continued investments in RWAs underscore that institutional interest is shifting towards tangible adoption and long-term structural changes. This trend is likely to persist, regardless of market volatility.

“Even if regulatory guidelines progress gradually and market maturation takes time, institutional investments are increasingly moving on-chain through products like BlackRock’s BUIDL and Franklin Templeton’s offerings, highlighting a systemic shift that is already in progress,” stated McCluskey.

It is evident that RWAs have transitioned from being a theoretical concept to becoming one of the most viable pathways for blockchain's mainstream adoption. As large institutions continue to integrate traditional assets into digital ecosystems, the future for this sector appears stronger than ever.
