Circle is branching out into the foreign exchange (FX) market, positioning its stablecoins to modernize one of the most established areas of traditional finance. On Thursday, the issuer of USDC announced the launch of Circle StableFX, an institutional onchain FX platform based on Arc1, their upcoming layer-1 blockchain, as stated in a press release shared with Cointelegraph. Additionally, Circle introduced Circle Partner Stablecoins, a program designed to encourage regulated regional stablecoins.

According to the Bank of International Settlements (BIS), the daily trading volume in the global FX market reached $9.6 trillion in April, marking a 28% increase from the previous year. This volume is more than double that of all global stock markets combined and significantly exceeds the approximate $1.69 trillion in daily trading of US equities, which operates around the clock, five days a week, across major financial centers, as reported by Trading Economics.

Circle's new FX engine is designed to provide compliant institutions with access to stablecoin currency pairs, allowing for 24/7 onchain settlements at competitive rates and reduced counterparty risk. It aims to improve efficiency by minimizing the need for multiple counterparties and facilitating quicker access to global liquidity.

“With StableFX and Circle Partner Stablecoins, we’re connecting the world’s currencies on Arc,” said Nikhil Chandhok, Circle's Chief Product and Technology Officer.

To access the "compliance-centric trading environment," institutions will be required to undergo comprehensive Know-Your-Business and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) verifications. Circle StableFX is currently live on the Arc Testnet, providing developers and institutions a chance to explore its capabilities. The alpha version is set to be available for approved developers and institutions during the Arc mainnet launch scheduled for 2026.

Growing Trend Among Crypto Companies in Traditional Finance

Circle’s entrance into the FX market aligns with a growing trend among prominent crypto companies looking to redefine traditional markets and capture a portion of their revenue. This venture into FX could open up a substantial new revenue stream for the issuer of the world’s second-largest stablecoin.

Circle reported a revenue surge to $740 million in the third quarter of the year, reflecting a 66% increase compared to the same period last year. The stablecoin issuer launched the Arc testnet in October, enlisting the participation of investment firms such as Goldman Sachs, asset management giant BlackRock, credit card leader Visa, and over 100 other companies.

Similarly, Coinbase, the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume, is also exploring opportunities in traditional finance through initiatives like tokenized stocks, prediction markets, and promoting stablecoin adoption with USDC. This is part of their broader "Everything Exchange" vision.

“We laid out our vision of an Everything Exchange last quarter, and made progress in Q3 by increasing the number of tradable spot assets, expanding our derivatives offerings, and continuing to lay the groundwork for additional pillars,” Coinbase shared in its Q3 earnings report.
