This strategic pivot comes as Circle encounters stiff competition from Tether, which generated an impressive $5.2 billion in revenue in 2025 and currently holds a commanding 60.1% share of the $311 billion stablecoin market with its USDT.

Arc's public testnet has seen remarkable activity, processing more than 150 million transactions since its rollout in October 2025. This growth includes nearly 1.5 million active wallets, with an average settlement time of about half a second, as indicated in Circle’s latest product update.

The network has attracted over 100 institutional participants in its first three months, including major players like BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, BNY Mellon, Société Générale, and Visa.

As Circle pushes forward, Tether is expanding its footprint beyond stablecoins into traditional finance. Tether has recently acquired 140 tons of gold valued at $23 billion and introduced USAT, a stablecoin compliant with regulations established by America's GENIUS Act.

Tether's CEO, Paolo Ardoino, expressed ambitions of becoming one of the largest “gold central banks in the world,” purchasing over a ton of gold each week.

In 2025, Tether emerged as the most profitable entity in the crypto sector, commanding 41.9% of the stablecoin revenue and maintaining a market capitalization of $186.8 billion, ranking as the third-largest digital asset globally.

The asset management giant has accepted its tokenized BUIDL fund as collateral at Binance and is looking at Bitcoin as a core component of its portfolio for 2025.

Visa has also made headlines by announcing a plan to permit U.S. financial institutions to use USDC on Solana for transaction settlements, touting “seven-day availability and improved resilience during weekends and holidays.” The initial participants, including Cross River Bank and Lead Bank, are already using USDC for settlements with Visa, with a broader rollout anticipated throughout 2026.

“Financial institutions are preparing to integrate stablecoins into their treasury operations,” remarked Rubail Birwadker, Visa’s Global Head of Growth Products and Strategic Partnerships.
