Stripe has made a significant move, enabling consumers to pay for various services such as AI subscriptions, SaaS tools, and creator content using stablecoins. The announcement was made in a blog post on October 14, indicating that businesses can now process recurring payments in stablecoins across major blockchains, currently available to US-based businesses in a private preview.

"We currently support subscription payments made in USDC over the Base and Polygon blockchains," the blog post confirmed.

Jennifer Lee, a Product Manager from Stripe's newly established Crypto team, demonstrated how users can select the crypto payment option alongside traditional card and U.S. bank choices during the Stripe checkout process.

Now, users can pay directly with Circle’s USDC stablecoin by connecting popular wallets like MetaMask, Phantom, Coinbase Wallet, and Trust Wallet.

Stripe's Smart Contracts Tackle Payment Challenges

To facilitate stablecoin subscriptions, Stripe has implemented a smart contract that eliminates a common issue where wallet owners need to manually "sign" each transaction. This smart contract allows customers to save their wallet as a payment method and authorize recurring payments without needing to re-sign each transaction, compatible with over 400 supported wallets.

Since introducing stablecoin payments a year ago, Stripe has noticed that this has accelerated global expansion for rapidly growing companies. Notably, the top 20 AI companies using Stripe generate 60% of their revenues internationally, although cross-border payments can often be costly, slow, and prone to failure.

The Shift Towards Stablecoins in AI Payments

AI firms such as Shadeform have observed that around 20% of their payment volume now originates from stablecoins, which provide near-instant settlement and lower transaction costs.

In response, Stripe has rolled out subscription capabilities aimed at the 30% of businesses on its platform that operate on recurring revenue models. The stablecoin subscription feature is compatible with various Stripe products, including Elements, Checkout, the Payment Intents API, and Payment Links, and accommodates one-off payments. However, there are some limitations, with a cap of $10,000 per transaction and $100,000 per month.

According to Alex Mashrabov, CEO of Higgsfield AI, “Stablecoin payments via Stripe help us reduce our cost of revenue for payments from all around the globe, attract more tech-forward users, and reach folks who don’t have access to other payment methods.”

On September 30, Stripe also introduced Open Issuance, allowing businesses to create and manage their own stablecoins effectively.

With Open Issuance, firms can mint and burn tokens without limitations, customize their reserve structures, and earn rewards on their holdings. Zach Abrams, Co-founder and CEO of Bridge, believes that businesses focused on money transfer should invest in stablecoins, with Open Issuance helping them manage stablecoins effectively.

Earlier in September, Stripe launched Tempo, a new Layer 1 blockchain designed to enhance high-throughput stablecoin transactions, collaborating initially with financial heavyweights like Visa, Deutsche Bank, and Standard Chartered. Tempo aims to address existing infrastructure challenges, as current blockchains typically process between 5 to 1,000 transactions per second, while Stripe can manage peaks exceeding 10,000 TPS.

Designed with fiat-denominated fees rather than blockchain-specific tokens, the platform allows users to pay gas fees in any stablecoin through an automated market maker system.

Stripe CEO on the Future of Bank Deposit Rates

Stripe CEO Patrick Collison predicts that the rise of stablecoins will compel banks to increase deposit yields to retain customers. Responding to venture capitalist Nic Carter, he remarked that depositors "are going to, and should, earn something closer to a market return on their capital." Citing current savings account yields of just 0.40% in the U.S. and 0.25% in the EU, Collison noted that banks have become overly reliant on cheap deposits. “Cheap deposits are great, but being so consumer-hostile feels to me like a losing position,” he concluded.
