Hackers are exploiting a JavaScript library to plant crypto drainers

Overview of the Current Threat

Cybersecurity nonprofit Security Alliance (SEAL) has reported that a significant increase in crypto drainers is being observed on legitimate websites, resulting from a vulnerability in the open-source front-end JavaScript library, React. React is mainly used to develop user interfaces, especially for web applications. On December 3, the React development team disclosed a flaw that was identified by white hat hacker Lachlan Davidson. This vulnerability allows for unauthenticated remote code execution, which means attackers can insert and execute their own malicious code.

According to SEAL, malicious actors are leveraging this specific vulnerability, designated as CVE-2025-55182, to insert wallet-draining code into cryptocurrency websites. "We are witnessing a substantial rise in the presence of drainers on credible crypto websites due to the exploitation of the recent React CVE. We strongly advise all websites to audit their front-end code for any suspicious elements IMMEDIATELY," stated the SEAL Team.

Precautions for Affected Websites

Websites that have been marked with phishing warnings may find themselves flagged without prior notice, according to SEAL. They recommend that website operators take proactive measures to uncover any hidden drainers that could compromise user safety.

"Scan your servers for CVE-2025-55182. Ensure your front-end code is not unexpectedly loading assets from unknown sources. Verify that none of the scripts your front end loads consist of obfuscated JavaScript. Check if the wallet is displaying the correct recipient during the signature request," the SEAL Team cautioned.

"If your project is facing blocks, this might be the underlying cause. Please verify your code before requesting the removal of any phishing warnings," they added.

React's Response and Fix

On December 3, the React team released a fix for the vulnerability identified as CVE-2025-55182 and urges developers using react-server-dom-webpack, react-server-dom-parcel, or react-server-dom-turbopack to upgrade their systems immediately to eliminate the risk.

“If your app’s React implementation does not utilize a server, it is not affected by this vulnerability. Similarly, if your app does not leverage a framework, bundler, or plugin that supports React Server Components, it is also safeguarded from this issue,” the team clarified.
