Digital Bonds on the Rise in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has launched a new series of multi-currency digital bonds, marking its third offering as it strives to become a global leader in the digital asset space. According to a Bloomberg report on Monday, the newly introduced "digitally native" bonds will be available in US dollars, Hong Kong dollars, euros, and offshore yuan. The deal is expected to be priced soon, potentially as early as Monday.

Hong Kong’s latest issuance builds upon the city's established framework for tokenized bonds, which was announced back in 2024. In 2023, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) introduced its second tokenized green bond, utilizing blockchain technology to improve the transparency of the redemption process.

Furthermore, Hong Kong has cemented its status as Asia's premier international bond issuance center, responsible for nearly 30% of all Asian international bond deals. The city has maintained the top position in this area for nine consecutive years.

The push to issue digital green bonds comes shortly after Franklin Templeton, a global asset management firm, launched Hong Kong's very first tokenized money-market fund. This fund leverages blockchain to enhance both transparency and transaction efficiency and is initially available to institutional investors.

Additionally, Bloomberg has noted that companies based in Hong Kong have already issued at least six digital notes, which collectively raised around $1 billion, with four of these notes being launched this year alone.

Rain Yin, a Director at S&P Global Ratings, mentioned that the proposed digital notes have been awarded an AA+ rating. She explained that this rating is supported by a plan to transition the notes back to traditional systems in the event of any disruptions.
