JPMorgan has officially introduced JPM Coin, a blockchain-based deposit token developed for its institutional clients. This token is tied to dollar deposits at the bank and enables users to transfer money through Coinbase’s Base public blockchain.

Naveen Mallela, the global co-head of JPMorgan's blockchain division, Kinexys, shared with Bloomberg that this new system will drastically reduce payment times to mere seconds and allow transactions to occur at any time, effectively eliminating traditional banking delays.

Mallela noted that there are plans to extend this service to additional blockchain networks in the future. This launch signals JPMorgan's commitment to incorporating digital assets into its primary institutional banking services.

JPMorgan Expands Access to JPM Coin

The launch of JPM Coin follows successful pilot tests with significant firms, including Mastercard, Coinbase, and B2C2. Notably, Coinbase is expected to accept JPM Coin as collateral for various transactions and liquidity operations.

Mallela indicated that the bank is contemplating making the token accessible to the clients of its clients in the future. Furthermore, the bank aims to introduce the token in other currency denominations, pending regulatory approval.

He described deposit tokens as "yield-bearing," which distinguishes them from stablecoins. These tokens are essentially digital representations of existing funds in client bank accounts, designed to make blockchain transactions smoother and more efficient.

"We believe stablecoins attract considerable attention, but for institutional clients, deposit-based products provide an appealing alternative," Mallela remarked.

Earlier in June, JPMorgan had introduced its first banking token, “JPMD,” on the Coinbase Base network, following a trademark application for the term “JPMD.” The JPMD token is fully backed on a one-to-one basis by U.S. dollars and was initially only made available to institutional clients.

Financial Institutions Embrace Digital Tokens for Transaction Efficiency

This announcement positions JPMorgan among a growing array of financial institutions, such as Citigroup Inc., Banco Santander, Deutsche Bank, and PayPal, which are all exploring the integration of blockchain technology for faster and less expensive transactions.

For example, the Bank of Korea unveiled plans for central bank deposit tokens using public blockchain networks last May, referring to them as a “type of stablecoin.” This initiative aimed to counteract the increasing reliance on global stablecoins.

Other banks, including BNY Mellon, have begun experimenting with tokenized deposits to "modernize" their payment systems and broaden the use of blockchain technology in global finance.
