Christian Rau, Mastercard’s Head of Crypto Europe, recently discussed the company’s viewpoint on the integration of crypto within its payment services. In an interview with Big Whale, he emphasized Mastercard's keen interest in crypto-assets as they gradually weave web3 technology into their established global payment network.

Currently, the company is focusing on offering on-ramp and off-ramp services through cards that allow crypto holders to use their assets in everyday transactions. However, Rau clarified that they do not aim to become a solely crypto-focused payment platform, describing cryptocurrency as a useful payment technology rather than a revolutionary change. “Our strategy hasn’t changed in 50 years: enable people to pay and businesses to be paid, in a safe and compliant manner,” he explained, as quoted by journalist Grégory Raymond.

The Role of Stablecoins

While discussing the firm’s direction, Rau noted that their current strategy involves prioritizing “safe and compliant payments.” He added, “Crypto fits into this logic. We are not seeking to reinvent the system but to enrich it.”

Mastercard is not looking to build its own blockchain for the time being, but it hasn’t completely ruled it out. “We prioritize interoperability with existing solutions. But if none meet our needs, we could consider it,” Rau mentioned.

Rau also highlighted several collaborations with crypto companies such as MetaMask, Bitget, MoonPay, and Kraken. These partnerships enable Mastercard to facilitate crypto payments for users at both online and physical retail stores.

“Implementing crypto has been complex, particularly with non-custodial wallets," he expressed. For example, the collaboration with MetaMask required the development of an architecture where a smart contract ensures real-time verification of available funds.

Recently, Mastercard has been paying close attention to the rise of stablecoins. Rau views stablecoins as an advantageous technology that can accelerate transactions and enhance cross-border settlements. In 2024, the total transaction volume of stablecoins reached about $27.6 trillion, surpassing the combined transaction volume of both Visa and Mastercard.

Nevertheless, Rau cautioned that stablecoins do not fully replace traditional financial systems. Instead of being seen as competition, Mastercard considers the adoption of stablecoins as a chance to broaden its financial payment system. “We consider them as a settlement technology. They can improve cross-border payments or reduce exchange rate risks. But they do not replace the services we provide, such as protection in case of disputes,” he shared.

Partnerships with stablecoin issuer Circle and payment providers like MoonPay allow Mastercard to leverage the global shift towards stablecoin adoption. “Today, we already enable millions of people to spend their stablecoin balances at over 150 million Mastercard merchant locations worldwide,” the company stated in a June 2025 announcement.
