Recent Decline in Circle Stock: An Overreaction?

On Tuesday, Circle Internet Financial, the company behind the USDC stablecoin, faced a steep decline, with its stock plummeting 22% to $98. This drop followed concerns regarding lawmakers' decisions related to the stablecoin yield situation.

The selloff stemmed from a revised draft of the Senate Banking Committee's crypto market structure bill, known as the CLARITY Act. This bill would ban platforms from offering interest yields, directly or indirectly, for holding stablecoins or in a manner similar to bank deposits.

Despite this downturn, some analysts believe Circle presents a valuable investment opportunity, labeling it as the clear choice for anyone looking to invest in stablecoins. Matt Hougan, Bitwise’s CIO, described the market's response as “overblown,” stating that the latest developments in the CLARITY Act will not significantly impact Circle's fundamental outlook.

"Interest income has not been a primary driver of stablecoin growth so far; most stablecoins are held in ways that do not generate interest. They have surged in popularity because they enable seamless global money transfers, serve as collateral in lending, and provide alternatives to unstable national currencies."

Hougan also pointed out that stablecoins offer unprecedented convenience, which he referred to as “the killer app for money.” He compared yields from traditional savings and checking accounts, which are 0.60% and 0.07%, respectively.

"People aren’t keeping their money there for the yield," he added, predicting that as the financial system increasingly adopts blockchain technology, stablecoins’ importance will grow, regardless of interest offerings.

Forecasting Circle's $75 Billion Valuation

Further exploring his projections for Circle, Hougan shared insights regarding the future market capitalization of the stablecoin sector and Circle's anticipated market share.

According to a report from Citigroup, stablecoin assets under management (AUM) are projected to reach $1.9 trillion by 2030 in a conservative scenario, while a more optimistic view estimates up to $4 trillion.

Bitwise’s CIO emphasized that Circle's USDC, which is currently the second-largest dollar-pegged token, commands 25% of the overall stablecoin market. Its dominance is even more significant in the regulated stablecoin market, where it holds over 80% share.

"If you consider that much of the growth in stablecoin AUM will emerge from regulated markets as banks, fintech companies, and large enterprises prefer onshore, compliant stablecoins, Circle's market share could surpass the current 25%."

Lastly, Hougan discussed Circle's potential revenue from deposits four years down the line. Currently, the company earns about 4% on $80 billion in AUM backing USDC, sharing around 60% with distribution partners like Coinbase, which results in a net rate of 1.6%.

While he noted that Circle's future profitability is dependent on interest rates and competition from rival stablecoins, Hougan forecasted that this revenue share might halved by 2030, bringing it down to 0.8%.

Based on these “conservative assumptions” regarding the broader stablecoin market, Circle's market share, and margins, Bitwise’s CIO concluded that Circle's valuation could reach $75 billion by 2030—even in light of recent CLARITY Act uncertainties.
