A Surprising Reawakening

A blockchain wallet that was part of Ethereum's initial coin offering (ICO) in 2015 has recently become active again after lying dormant for over a decade. This wallet has achieved an extraordinary 10,684 times return on investment, capturing the attention of prominent blockchain analytics platforms like Lookonchain and Whale Alert, who noted this development on X.

Transaction Highlights

As per the findings, the previously inactive wallet address, 0x782F…20a97, received 850 ETH during the ICO and did not touch the funds until now. Following more than ten years of hibernation, the wallet initiated its first transaction since the ICO. Lookonchain disclosed that the original investor spent just $263.50 to acquire the 850 ETH at a price of about $0.31 per coin. Fast forward to today, and that stash is now valued around $2.82 million, resulting in a shocking return on investment.

Initiation of a Selling Trend

Interestingly, the user's first transaction after the long period of dormancy was a minor one, sending 1 ETH to Coinbase. Although this might seem trivial, such actions can signal a potential for larger liquidation activities. Following this initial test transaction, the wallet has commenced a selling spree, moving at least 130 ETH to Coinbase in various batches ranging from 10 to 30 ETH. Additionally, some of these funds were directed to another undisclosed address.

At the time of this report, the wallet holder retains a balance of 683 ETH, which is valued at approximately $2.27 million, based on an ETH price of $3,330.

Resurgence of Ethereum ICO Participants

This year has seen numerous reports of Ethereum ICO participants reactivating their wallets after long periods of dormancy. Earlier this month, one user returned after more than ten years to stake 40,000 ETH, following a preliminary transaction of 5 ETH to an unknown wallet. In another instance from September, a participant who received 1 million ETH during the ICO resumed activity after eight years, staking 150,000 ETH. In October, another dormant user sold 1,500 ETH via FalconX. The Crypto Basic has recorded several cases of ICO-era wallets ending their long slumber to liquidate parts of their ETH holdings.

Looking back, in 2023, one inactive ICO address that had remained dormant for eight years transferred 61,216 ETH to Kraken. Similarly, another participant moved 4,160 ETH to Kraken, likely in preparation for a sale.

Despite the recent transfers from this long-dormant wallet to Coinbase, the price of ETH has remained relatively stable, close to the $3,300 mark.
