The DAO Returns: $300M+ Hack Funds Resurrected for Ethereum Security—This Time Different?

This time, the intention is clear: rather than experimenting, the focus is on reinforcing Ethereum’s defenses.

Recently, Griff Green, an Ethereum developer and long-time community member, announced that hundreds of millions of dollars in Ether, still unclaimed after The DAO hack, will be redirected into a new funding initiative focused on security.

In a discussion on the Unchained podcast, Green explained that a substantial amount of ETH remains locked in contracts intended for compensating victims of the exploit, none of whom have claimed it. Instead of remaining idle, these funds will be used to generate staking income and support security projects across the Ethereum ecosystem.

Understanding the DAO Hack and Ethereum’s Historic Fork

In early 2016, The DAO was created as a decentralized venture capital fund, allowing token holders to collectively decide on capital allocation. At its launch, it raised over $150 million in ETH, which was a record at the time.

However, in June 2016, an attacker exploited a vulnerability in its smart contracts—specifically, a reentrancy vulnerability—to drain approximately 3.6 million ETH into another contract.

The hack resulted in a major crisis for Ethereum and led to a contentious hard fork that aimed to refund most of the lost funds to investors.

This decision split the community and resulted in the creation of two separate blockchains: Ethereum and Ethereum Classic.

Although the fork returned much of the stolen money, the recovery process was complicated. Green indicated that around $6 million was set aside to deal with complex claims from investors unable to retrieve their ETH through standard procedures.

He joined a multisignature wallet that was set up for this purpose. Over time, more than 80% of that amount was successfully claimed, but about $200 million, at current market prices, was left untouched.

Green stated that these unclaimed funds will be the foundation of a newly established initiative called The DAO Security Fund. This fund will incorporate roughly 70,500 ETH from an ExtraBalance Withdrawal contract, along with about 4,600 ETH and DAO tokens from the original curator multisig.

The funds will be staked, with the earnings allocated to security initiatives rather than given out as a lump sum. This initiative is in collaboration with the Ethereum Foundation and supports its larger goal of a “Trillion Dollar Security” strategy.

The DAO Security Fund will employ decentralized allocation methods instead of traditional top-down grants. Suggested approaches include quadratic funding, retroactive public goods funding, ranked-choice voting, and similar decentralized governance models.

Oversight will involve prominent figures from the Ethereum security community, such as Vitalik Buterin, MetaMask co-founder Taylor Monahan, Jordi Baylina, and members of the SEAL 911 response group.

Giveth, a public funding platform co-founded by Green, will likely assist in managing the fund distributions.
