Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano recently discussed the plans for a significant increase in Ethereum's gas limit during an interview on the Bankless podcast. He indicated that the target of raising the gas limit to 180 million next year is just a starting point. “I think that’s the floor, that’s the minimum; I believe we can exceed that,” Sassano stated, shortly after the gas limit was recently increased from 45 million to 60 million.

Sassano pointed out that the Ethereum development community, including core developers and researchers, has generally agreed on a goal of tripling the gas limit within the next few years. Some developers are even considering a potential fivefold increase in the gas limit within the next year.

Sassano explained that developers can reach this goal by rebalancing transaction costs, making some actions less expensive while increasing costs for others. He provided an example, saying, “We can reduce the cost of a basic ETH transfer from 21,000 gas to 6,000 gas, which is more than a 70% reduction, without changing the gas limit.” By redistributing costs in such a manner, the network can better support higher gas limits.

“We’re essentially trading efficiencies here,” Sassano emphasized. Notably, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is also in support of a potential fivefold increase, suggesting that higher costs might be applied to operations that are considered inefficient to process.

Anticipation for the Fusaka Upgrade

Sassano has co-authored an Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) with core developer Ben Adams, aiming to incorporate it in Ethereum’s upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade, expected in the first half of 2026. Recently, several Ethereum developers have commented on the increment to a 60 million gas limit, a move that garnered support from over 513,000 validators. Adams noted in a post on X, “Remember when ‘double L1 gas’ sounded spicy on Twitter?”

“The debate about Ethereum's gas limit shifted from being labeled 'too risky' to 'already live' in less than a year,” expressed Adams. Echoing his sentiment, Ethereum core developer Toni Wahrstätter remarked, “A 2× increase in just one year — and this is just the beginning.”

These changes come ahead of a significant network upgrade, called Fusaka, which aims to bolster Ethereum’s scalability. The upgrade is set to debut on December 3, having successfully passed the final testing phase on the Hoodi testnet, which occurred on October 29.
