Abdul, the head of DeFi at the layer-1 blockchain Monad, highlighted this shift as a historically significant indicator. In a post on X, he mentioned that a similar trend noted in June preceded a dramatic price hike for Ether.

During that period, ETH was priced around $2,800 before reaching an all-time high of $4,946 by late August. Currently, Ether is trading at about $3,000.

Ethereum's staking mechanism operates on a proof-of-stake model, which requires validators to lock up ETH to help secure the network. Consequently, changes in staking activities are often interpreted as indicators of market sentiment. A rise in exits might imply intent to sell, while increased staking signals long-term confidence and a decrease in immediate supply.

Abdul noted that the exit queue has been a leading indicator of selling pressure throughout 2025. He estimated that around 5% of Ether's total supply has changed hands since July, which includes a significant unstaking event by staking provider Kiln in September.

According to Abdul, approximately 70% of the unstaked ETH was acquired by BitMine, which now manages about 3.4% of the total supply. Kiln executed a controlled withdrawal of its validators in September following an incident involving the digital asset platform SwissBorg, describing the action as a precaution rather than a sign of dwindling confidence in Ethereum.

Blockchain data from Lookonchain reveals that BitMine staked over 342,000 ETH, valued at around $1 billion, in just two days.
