Ethereum (ETH), known as the largest platform for smart contracts, has successfully rolled out its Fulu-Osaka (Fusaka) hard fork. With significant attention on optimizing Peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS), the significance of EIP 7825, which caps the transaction gas limit, is at risk of being overlooked. It’s critical for Ethereum to maintain scalability as it navigates into the ZK era.

According to Michael Dong, co-founder of Brevis, a ZK co-processor, EIP 7825 is among the most underrated upgrades for the future development of ZK proofs and for achieving up to 100 times the current scaling capabilities of Ethereum. By implementing a limit on the gas that each transaction can use to approximately 16.78 million, the risk of a single "mega-transaction" monopolizing an entire Ethereum block is significantly reduced.

Each Ethereum transaction is now capped at a gas limit of 30 million, meaning that no transaction can exceed this limit for validation. Prior to the Fusaka upgrade, larger transactions were at risk of consuming excessive resources and potentially increasing latency issues.

Dong elaborates that this posed a serious challenge for zero-knowledge proving, as no existing ZK systems could effectively predict how Ethereum would manage these singular heavy workloads. This uncertainty inhibited the ability to verify transactions on Ethereum in real-time, which is essential for achieving the ambitious goal of “100X Ethereum scaling.”

Now, with a predictable and bound gas expenditure per block for individual transactions, the ZK proving systems can also operate with greater predictability. Brevis co-founder estimates that even under the worst conditions with maximum transactions post-Fusaka, the entire proving procedure will take no longer than five seconds.

Consequently, with optimized parallel computing capabilities, ZK systems are now able to consistently verify blocks containing 100-200 million gas, perfectly aligning with the immediate proving objectives outlined in the ZK roadmaps for Ethereum.
